Mental health remains one of the top reasons Australians visit GPs, according to the 2024 Health of the Nation report, with 71% of GPs listing it as a key concern. The RACGP is now calling for a 20% increase in Medicare rebates for mental health consultations. With the cost-of-living crisis, more patients are delaying care, worsening their mental health. The current mental health system does not allow many people to get the services they need when and where they need them, especially individuals on Medicare or Medicaid. A new report from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) of Inspector General finds that Medicare and Medicaid have a dire shortage of mental health care providers.
