Business Education Teacher | Experienced Elementary and ESL Educator | Open to Opportunities and Passionate about meeting challenges head on. 🌍✨📚
Celebrating the final day of attendance for an ESL student, who, despite hesitating to speak up during first encounters, has shown remarkable academic and interpersonal growth. I have been taken in by this. As educators, the emotional and human aspects of our role can deeply impact us. In the classroom, especially for male educators, showing emotion or investing emotionally in students may not always align with traditional expectations. Cultural nuances, particularly in connecting with students' family life, can be seen as taboo in some cultures, highlighting the significant differences between Asian and Western norms. Despite these variations, the universal truth remains—educators share an innate desire for the best possible outcomes for all students. #CaringEducators #StudentSuccess #RealMenTeach #OpenToWork #JamaicanTeachers

Providing International Schooling Support for Globally Mobile Parents and their Children 1. Research Education Systems 📚: Start by understanding the education system of the country you're moving to. Look into the curriculum, teaching methods, and the language of instruction. 2. International vs Local Schools 🏫: International schools often offer a curriculum similar to what your child is accustomed to and can ease the transition. Local schools, on the other hand, can provide a more immersive cultural experience. Consider your child’s adaptability, language proficiency, and long-term educational goals when making this decision. 3. Visit Schools 🚶♀️ : If possible, visit potential schools to get a feel for the environment. Speak with teachers, administrators, and even students if possible. This can give you a sense of the school’s culture, teaching style, and facilities. 4. Consider Your Child’s Needs 👧👦: Every child is unique. Consider their individual needs, interests, and strengths when choosing a school. Some children might thrive in a structured environment, while others might do better in a more flexible setting. 5. Language Support 🗣️: If the school’s primary language of instruction is different from your child’s native language, check if they offer language support services. This could be in the form of additional language classes or tutoring. 6. Transition Support 🔄: Look for schools that offer support to help new students adjust. This could include orientation programs, buddy systems, or counselling services. 7. Extracurricular Activities 🎨: Investigate the extracurricular options available. These activities can help your child develop new skills, make friends, and integrate into the school community. 8. Safety and Well-being 🔒: Safety should be a top priority. Ensure the school has policies and procedures in place to protect all students. 9. Parental Involvement 👪: Consider how the school involves parents. Active engagement can help you stay connected to your child’s education and the school community. 10. Feedback from Other Parents 💬: Seek out feedback from other expat parents. Their experiences can provide valuable insights into the school’s environment and quality of education. Choosing the right school for your child during an international employment requires thorough research and consideration of various factors. By focusing on these key areas, you can make an informed decision that best suits your child’s needs and ensures a smooth transition to their new school. 🌟 #InternationalSchooling #ExpatLife #ParentingAbroad #GlobalEducation

O Virtual Exchanges and the benefits to student teachers At 8 years old we all dream about our jobs when we “grow up”. Well, my childhood dream never changed and I became exactly what I have always dreamed of, a teacher!!! I followed my dreams, my passion and my somewhat weird need to always help others, regardless of them asking me to or not. In the process of achieving my dream, I had many different jobs, but none of those temporary jobs kept me from getting to where I am today, teaching ESL, finding international opportunities for my very socially isolated students and fighting with all my mighty to get more colleagues on board this amazing journey that is internationalisation of our profession. So what does all this has to do with Virtual Exchanges? Everything!! You see, shortly before the pandemic hit I was lucky enough to finally get a break and join the very exclusive Erasmus+ world in Portugal. It was March 2019. After that, I joined all the VE Valiant was offering. However, each time I applied for a VE, I was faced with a very unjust question “Are you teaching in a rural or geographically isolated area?” I thought, no, but why would you only cater to those teachers? So, I always justified my application with the fact that despite living and working in a city with 2 million people, I had no support from any of my colleagues. I was the only person willing to work openly with teachers and students from abroad at my school. Also my students barely have money to eat and rarely leave their neighbourhood, let alone get in touch with different teaching environments. So, we were not in rural areas, nor in geographically isolated ones, but we were socially isolated!! When I learned I had been selected to participate in these VE’s I was over the moon!!! Needless to say that my professional development was faster in these VE’s than in any mandatory training we must undergo each year in Portugal. I could finally exchange ideas with like-minded people and share ideas, thoughts, problems and anxieties! Suddenly, I wasn’t alone anymore. ETwinning projects were easier to come up with and soon VE 3, with student teachers, showed my students how wonderful teaching could be in the EU because we could work with teachers from different countries as well as colleagues without travelling (during Covid time). Why were these VE’s so important? Because student teachers were not ready to be teachers in the real world!!! Because student teachers were still being asked impossible tasks that are not useful in their daily practices as future teachers!! Because our socially isolated students had the chance to experience what internationalisation is without spending money!! Because there was real impact in student teachers and my own students. In my own point of view, a Virtual Exchange should be mandatory for any and all student teacher across the world. You just never know where you will end up teaching, in the world! Ana Magano

The Importance of Literacy for Immigrants and the Challenges of ESL Education in the U.S.A. Today. Immigrating to a new country with a different primary language comes with many challenges. One of the most critical hurdles immigrants face is developing literacy in the new language. Being literate opens up opportunities for employment, further education, civic participation, and full integration into the host community. For immigrants, learning to read, write, and communicate effectively in the dominant language is crucial for success and prosperity in their new home. However, attaining literacy as an adult second language learner presents difficulties. Acquiring a new language becomes increasingly more challenging with age, as the brain is already wired for the first language. Older immigrants must work much harder than young children to develop reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar structures, and pronunciation in the second language. They also have less time to immerse themselves in the language than native speakers who learn from birth. English as a Second Language, or ESL, programs aim to help immigrant adults overcome these challenges by teaching literacy. Yet ESL teachers face their obstacles. Classes are often overcrowded with students of varying language abilities, cultural backgrounds, education levels, and goals. Teachers must differentiate instruction and materials to engage a diverse group of learners. They must also be sensitive to cultural differences and build rapport with students who may feel vulnerable as language novices. Students juggle learning the new language while working low-wage jobs, raising families, and navigating an unfamiliar society and system. Many need more transportation, childcare, or the financial means for private tutoring or language immersion outside of class. They have to make significant progress in a limited number of weekly hours. Testing and certification requirements add pressure, as does the stress of gaining skills needed for the workforce or further education within a limited period. Overall, developing literacy as an immigrant is an immense challenge and profoundly crucial for full participation in one's adopted community. With dedication from students and teachers, ESL programs work to overcome obstacles so that immigrants of all backgrounds can improve their language skills and futures. Public support for such programs will help welcome and integrate newcomers to contribute their talents.

My blog on International Language Day... Parenting is a joyful experience. Cuddling, kissing, hugging, playing, and nourishing the young ones is a special feeling. And that feeling became magical for me when both the little ones started to utter those first few words in their life. Baba itaaaa (Dad, I am here) Baba Zooov (Dad, I am your life) ... broken words struggling and stumbling to form a sentence as they tried to put meaning and names to the strange world around them. A beautiful process that became even more adorable when little ones conversed in their mother language with people around them. Colloquial words that we as parents heard from our grandparents sound so special when coming from these little ones. However, about 37 per cent of students in low- and middle-income countries in the world are not being taught in the language they speak and understand best. In India, the estimate is around 35 per cent including many children studying in English medium schools.
