New initiative aimed at driving circularity within the footwear industry

I AM GIVING THE BIGGEST KEYNOTE PRESENTATION OF MY LIFE ... next week in Portland, Oregon. I've been writing for 3 months - trying to bring together everything I've learned over the past 4 years since I set up Circular Footwear Initiative. (major nudge from Dhruv Boruah to make that happen). I'm only able to do this because of all of those in the footwear industry who have engaged with me for 48 months solid - sharing thoughts, forecasts, and a genuine desire to turn this footwear industry into the greenest on the planet. Nearly all of this is offline, or in closed Zoom groups, so we can always talk openly. I can't even talk about my own consulting work in footwear, as none of it is live .... yet. Biggest shout out to Joey 🌱 Pringle of Veshin Factory who has made me a special pair of shoes to wear on stage - they embody much of what I'll be talking about. To people like Scott Kuhlman Stefan Mathys and Luke Haverhals who joined the initiative at the very beginning from October 2020. And to my sounding board on all things footwear - Nicoline van Enter (btw I just signed up to the December Footwearology conference and exhibition. See you in Barcelona!) Without this vibrant community of suppliers, makers and futurists, I would never have picked up so much, so quickly. My next book is called "The Future of Footwear", and this presentation is helping me bring together some of the huge ideas which are clearly happening now ... in pockets, but which will soon turn the whole footwear industry much more circular. And, of course, HUGE THANKS, to Andy Polk of Footwear Distributors and Retailers of America (FDRA) for inviting me to share the day on stage with him.(I'm hosting a panel on sustainable manufacture as well). The last few months of challenging preconceptions and flying into the future, has been a blast. There are 200 of the world's top footwear brains in the room. If you live in the U.S., and you aren't coming to Portland, there is still chance.

The footwear industry is a hard-won battle for dominance but we’re seeing that consumers don’t want to choose companies with the profit-first mentality anymore. The shoes we stand in need to stand for something. That’s the shift that Adidas started to see in 2015 when they joined forces with Parley for the Oceans. Together they seek “to inspire and mobilize an entire generation to help shape the future of our planet.” Parley conducts cleanups of plastics from areas like beaches and coastal communities which they then recycle and transform into the materials used for making products, like Adidas shoes. In 2021, in partnership with another purpose-driven footwear company, Allbirds, Adidas produced their lowest-ever carbon emissions performance running shoe. They called it FUTURECRAFT.FOOTPRINT. In addition to both the Allbirds logo and the Adidas logo, the shoes were designed with the total carbon footprint to produce the shoe printed visibly on the sole. Incorporating the mission into the product design is a sure way to stand out and get attention for the purpose your brand is aligned with.
