Engaging Educator + Curriculum Designer | Emerging Tech & Transferable Skills for Private Companies and Education
I am sharing this great article by Ken Shelton, who I saw give a great Webinar on equity in AI adoption yesterday. We all need more Techquity, which was true before ChatGPT 3.5 was released. https://lnkd.in/eUDPCXH9 Powerful quotes from the piece 💬 "It's time to start seeing tech access and how it's used in assignments as central school equity issues." "Much of the ed-tech sphere centers the voices of white educators, who often focus on minor tweaks of the existing system rather than questioning the system as a whole." "Technology-based learning experiences should align with and encourage higher-order thinking and greater creativity. We cannot simply set students in front of screens." "For Black and Brown learners especially, the digitization of lessons often equates to online worksheets and repetitive tasks rather than rich, meaningful learning."

Excited to be speaking about the Center for Democracy & Technology's research at Tech Tactics in Education this Wednesday, September 25! My session based on our original, nationally representative survey research of K-12 teachers, parents, and students will cover: ➡ How tools like generative AI, content filtering/blocking software, and student activity monitoring are impacting students' learning environments, ➡ How schools can avoid/combat against potential civil rights violations due to these tools, and; ➡ How to work with other school officials to ensure responsible, thoughtful procurement of edtech products. Looking forward to this conversation with other education and technology leaders! #TechTacticsEdu

The future of education is not in AI or a new methodology. The future of education is re-defining why we have school in the first place. We can't talk seriously about transforming education without talking about transforming our values. On a daily basis, I hear leaders, teachers, consultants talk about the importance of creating different experiences for schools for kids. That kids need empowerment, work that matters, community and active learning experiences... But when it comes to really transforming practice, I'm also met with statements like these: "Sometimes we need to sit down and learn things we don't want to." or "Kids need to pass the exams." or "Our kids cannot ______ (come up with ideas, sit still, ask questions, work together etc.). or "It's too loud, we need peace." Look. ✨ We cannot empower kids if we value control, fixed outcomes and compliance. ✨ We cannot do work that matters if we place a higher value on test performance over meaningful learning. ✨ We cannot create inclusive communities if we fail to place the highest value on discovering the strengths and potential of ALL of our kids. ✨ We cannot facilitate active learning and experimentation if we value silence. Transforming schools reaches far beyond a single method (even Project-Based Learning), a new structure or a new building. Transforming schools requires the courage to confront our most basically held assumptions about what the purpose of school is. Passing exams? Well-behaved kids? Compliance? Memorizing knowledge? Yeah. We know those values. We know how to run a great school with those goals. The real bravery lies in creating a new narrative about the purpose of school. For myself, it's always been about connection, human-skills, experimentation, curiosity and community. What about you? Ok. Off my soapbox for now. Photo: 2013. We all need beautiful changes in our lives. It's crucial to understand what stresses us and seek help when needed. I'm thrilled to share the wisdom I gained from participating in the Technovation for girls program. This experience opened my eyes to issues beyond my own, highlighting the impact we can have on the future of an entire generation. Alongside incredible individuals (and co-mentors) like Monica Honceriu and Lorena Furtuna, we teamed up with three amazing high school girls: Sara , Ana & Alexia to create StressLess. Check out our video: https://lnkd.in/dHv9B46H and try the tool yourselves: https://lnkd.in/dFvCz8DM . But we’re not stopping there. We aim to tackle the unspoken issues in schools, supporting students, teachers, and parents in managing anxiety and addressing the negative aspects of the current school environment. We invite passionate individuals to join our cause. Whether you're a front-end developer, data scientist, social media manager, concerned parent, teacher, student, or simply someone who cares about this mission, we need your support. Together, we can make a difference. Let's build a future where every student can thrive. #MentalHealth #StressManagement #Technovation #GirlsInTech #EducationReform #TransparencyInSchools #FutureLeaders #SupportStudents #JoinOurCause #MakeADifference #AIForGood #AIInEducation #EdTech #ArtificialIntelligence #TechForChange #AI4Impact
