Looking for a job in news? This is a role that will give you: - Creativity to help out in an "assignment desk" capacity. My digital content producers should always be pitching, developing and planning impactful content. You must have an understanding of the elements required to present the full story. - A place to be a self-starter. This is (in my mind) the single most important thing you can bring to the table. Don't wait for others to tell you who to call, what to chase and what questions to ask. You will have flexibility to be aggressive with news coverage and features for yourself and to pitch for our beat reporters in a way you can help maximize story telling. - Space to do the job. Instead of micromanagement, I'm more about macromanagement. You get freedom to do the job, as long as the job is done. Be prepared for -- the possibility of this role covering second shift/weekends. If that's a problem, news is probably not your jam. We don't keep bankers hours. Additionally, this is not a work from home role. You will have the flexibility to work from home during inclement weather and in other situations where we adapt to the day as best as we can -- but be prepared to work in the newsroom. Finally, you need to be a team player and have an eye for detail and a knack for editing (AP style). Raise your hand if you're the sole comms function in your organisation/department. 🙋♀️ It can be a tough job, but like any, it has its pros and cons. You sometimes lack support but get autonomy and oversight. You have limited expertise and perspective in comms but are surrounded by people from different walks of life with deep and unique insight. You're expected to be a full-stack generalist (aka writer-publicist-web developer-social media manager-content creator-graphic designer-videographer) but are always doing something different and developing your skills. It can be frustrating. The good thing is you have top-notch communication skills, so be sure to let the right people know how you can be better supported. 🙏 And if you ever want to vent about all that and more, you know where I am (probably trying to figure out how to work a gimbal). 🙂 #Marcoms #Comms

These folks GET IT when it comes to aligning needs with measured deliverables. I recommend watching the CEO’s YouTube videos on measurements - some sage advice that any team, whether partnering externally or wanting to know more about the benefits each step of the process. From the hiring perspective: the best and most open interviewing I’ve seen in ages!

A social media manager is not a content creator. A social media manager is not a data analyst. A social media manager is not a graphic designer or video editor. Brands need to hire teams that can appropriately handle the amount of work that actually goes into social media marketing. Instead of assigning 15 different roles to one person and calling them a social media manager. #socialmediamanager
