As a younger generations' giving habits are focused on organizations involved with environment, politics, and social issues - a dance company may be at the top of its artistic game, but have insufficient structure in place to support the growth needed. Joining an organization of Jamaican educators in Miami was a pivotal moment in my career. Almost every educator I was surrounded by had a doctorate. I was struck by a profound realization—the immense power and influence of role models who reflected my own heritage and experiences. They spoke like me, shared my struggles, and had risen to heights that once seemed unreachable. In their presence, the once distant dream of becoming 'Doctor' morphed into a tangible, achievable reality. This transformation in my own perception highlights a significant gap in many educational settings: the lack of diverse role models. Research strongly supports the importance of students of color, Black students particularly, having role models who look like them, especially in educational settings. When students can't see themselves in their leaders, their scope of what's possible narrows.
