During our panel discussion "Bridging the Gap: Aligning Curricula with a Skills-based Economy", Patrice Choong, Chief Data Officer at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, highlighted a significant shift in hiring practices towards a comprehensive assessment approach. This approach combines traditional academic achievements with the skills and experiences gained from internships or jobs. Northeastern University and Similar Universities Offer Practical Work Experience from Freshman to Senior Years in College In my opinion, our Covid era college students could mature faster with at least once per year practical training in STEM industries for 3 to 4 month per year where they will be exposed to work experiences similar to their future careers. In my opinion, most college professor are not aware of the typical jobs that their students will be doing after graduation. Summer internships for faculty and students in companies might bring relevance to the college experience. I worked in industry for 30 years and in academic environments for a total of 30 years. Most industrial STEM employers admire the brilliance of professors; but they also realize that professors are not aware of how technical knowledge is used in solving practical problems.

The Importance of Internships for Students Pursuing 4 year College Degrees Since 2008, I've noticed that most college students aren't aware of where they may be best suited for future employment if they are not planning to go to graduate school. I would highly recommend Summer Internships in STEM fields after the Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior years in college. Students in the sciences with B.S. degrees might become technical managers in very small companies with less than $5,000,000 in annual sales; but he or she will likely be doing routine assignments in very large companies unless he or she pursues a career in technical sales , marketing, or sales related technical support in large companies. In my opinion, an MBA can be very valuable to STEM students. At least two of my friends earned over $6,000,000 per year within 10 to 20 years after they completed MBAs at Stanford University and Michigan State University respectively. The MBA may add $30,000 to $50,000 per year to the annual incomes for most STEM graduates.
