𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐚 𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐫 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐤 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐚𝐭 300𝐤𝐦/𝐡?📘🏁 I know I did! I just finished reading "Race Car Aerodynamics" by Joseph Katz, a brilliant book that delves into the fundamentals (and more) of the science of aerodynamics and the art of designing race cars. From basic aerodynamic principles to real world examples of game changing aero devices this book manages to answer a lot of "How does it work?" type of questions without overwhelming the reader with too much theory. 𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐤𝐞𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐝𝐞: • The critical role of downforce in improving tire grip without adding extra weight. • The ability to test smaller scale vehicles in wind tunnels, by increasing flow speed to maintain same Reynolds number as in reality. • Utilizing multi-element airfoil designs to increase a wings effective camber (flap) and minimize or avoid flow separation by drooping the leading edge (slat). • The effect of side force on aerodynamic performance and the importance of the location of the center of pressure (cp) in relation to the center of gravity (cg) in determining a stable car. • The use of vortex generators to increase downforce and avoid flow separation as well as the different designs of vortex generators. As an enthusiast of aerodynamics and an aspiring aerodynamicist, this book has equipped me with valuable knowledge and has taken my passion to the next level! I now frequently find myself questioning the purpose of the multiple flaps, wings, spoilers and all the other aero devices I see on road cars. Rapid Scan 3D and AirShaper team up to improve the aerodynamics of Tim Burton’s Trans-Am TA2 race car. It discusses the challenges of traditional methods for optimizing aerodynamics, such as wind tunnel testing and track testing. The article then describes how Rapid Scan 3D and AirShaper were used to create a 3D model of the car and simulate different aerodynamic setups. The results of the simulations helped the team to understand how changes in ride height and rake affected the car's drag and downforce. This information was then used to make changes to the car's setup, which improved its performance. Automotive aerodynamics is the study of the aerodynamics of road vehicles. Its main goals are reducing drag and wind noise, minimizing noise emission, and preventing undesired lift forces and other causes of aerodynamic instability at high speeds. Air is also considered a fluid in this case. For some classes of racing vehicles, it may also be important to produce downforce to improve traction and thus cornering abilities.

Did you know? Porsche has always been an industry leader in both technological development, as well as end-product execution. Approximately 6,700 employees at the Development Centre in Weissach are dedicated to advancing Porsche technology and pushing the limits of automotive engineering. The Development Centre, just 25 kilometers from Porsche’s headquarters in Stuttgart is where Porsche Active Aerodynamics (PAA) was born. As with many Porsche innovations, PAA was developed in the design studio, tested in the wind tunnel and honed at the racetrack. For those who might not be familiar with the terminology: Active aerodynamics refers to devices that can actively manipulate the air flow behaviour around the car – for example through extendable spoilers or adjustable air intakes – in different directions such as less drag or more downforce. As far as I am aware, the slipperiest performance car ever made (Cd = 0.183) that also had downforce - at 403 km/h, front downforce was 300kg (660lb) and at the back, 50kg (110lb). Many people aren't aware that for a road car (or sedan-based race car), optimising the shape of a front undertray is likely to give more downforce than a traditional front splitter.
