The introduction of the Porsche 911 Turbo at the 1974 Paris Motor Show marked the dawn of a new era in high-performance vehicles. The 930 model, with its distinctive wide rear stance, large rear spoiler (fondly known as the "whale tail"), and turbocharged 3.0-liter flat-six engine, was an engineering marvel that redefined speed and handling for its time. It was the first production sports car to feature a turbocharger, a technology previously reserved for racing. This innovation allowed the 930 to achieve a remarkable 0-60 mph time of just 5.2 seconds, a feat almost unheard of in the mid-1970s. The 930 also introduced what became known as “turbo lag,” a characteristic delay in power delivery due to the turbocharger, which added a certain unpredictability and excitement to the driving experience. Despite its challenges, the 930 garnered a cult following, leading Porsche to refine the turbo technology in subsequent generations, making the 911 Turbo a symbol of both power and precision. Future iterations of the 911 Turbo have continued to build on the legacy of the 930, each generation pushing the boundaries of what a sports car can achieve while maintaining the soul of the original. Last weekend I had the chance to watch “King Richard”, the inspiring story of how Venus and Serena Williams became the amazing tennis players we all know. It’s a clear example of determination and hard work, fostered by Richard Williams, the main character in the movie, who was literally obsessed with making his daughters the best tennis players in the world. Overall, the movie is really good, following a good rhythm, and Will Smith really nails the role of Richard Williams. There are many observations and learnings in the movie. An obvious one is the question that comes up in a lot of discussions on whether anyone can master any given discipline with the right training plan. I still think this is the case but there have to be always certain underlying conditions to achieve that excellence status (being those conditions physical, mental, etc). In this case, both girls are motivated, committed and showing hunger to get better. It’s interesting when comparing it to Andre Agassi, who also had a father acting as a coach and determined to make him number one, but following a more controversial approach and pushing Andre to the point of making him hating tennis since early infancy. And still he made to number one… The second, is the important role that a coach plays in an individual’s career. The methods used by Richard Williams were probably not approved by everyone and his decisions might have not been the most appropriate ones at certain point, but in the long run it makes a difference to have a plan, follow it through and not get distracted by other factors. As an example of this, it is remarkable (spoiler alert!) how they reject the first multi million contract that Venus is offered, convinced about the potential that she had. It can be helpful sometimes to view your thoughts and feelings like a beachball. There could be a time that you made a mistake that prevented your team from making the finals, or there could have been a time that you froze during an audition, and the the thoughts and feelings from those situations could prevent you from performing at your next competition or audition. We often want to get rid off difficult thoughts and emotions, spending all that time and energy pushing it away. What if we viewed them as a beachball, where the harder we try to push them away may end up making things more difficult? What if we did not have to like or want these thoughts and emotions?
