The Power of Surroundings: Lessons from My Visit to BNI Champions Dubai Last week, I had the privilege of visiting the extraordinary BNI Champions chapter in Dubai—a vibrant community of 85+ driven and dynamic professionals. The energy, camaraderie, and passion in the room were simply unmatched. One particular takeaway from this visit resonated deeply with me, and I believe it’s a lesson worth sharing. A Story That Stays With You: The Donkey Lesson 🐴 During the meeting, Mr. Samarth, the Education Coordinator, shared a profound story about a donkey. It goes like this: Before purchasing a donkey, a man decided to test its character by placing it in a room with other donkeys overnight. The next morning, he observed that the donkey had quickly adapted to its surroundings, becoming as lazy and uninspired as the other donkeys in the room. The moral? You are influenced by the company you keep. If you surround yourself with lazy or unmotivated individuals, no matter your initial drive, you risk becoming like them—unproductive, complacent, and stagnant. Choosing the Right Environment: The Bungalow Analogy Samarth followed it up with another thought-provoking analogy: If you had the option to buy a bungalow, would you choose one located near a beautifully maintained bungalow or one next to a poorly maintained, neglected property? The answer is obvious. Similarly, in life and business, our surroundings shape our success. Just as we’d want our dream home in a well-kept neighborhood, we need to surround ourselves with inspiring, motivated, and positive people to thrive.
