Climate change is destroying natural wonders in the United States. Glacier National Park, Sequoia National Park, Saguaro National Park, and Indiana Dunes National Park are all finding that the natural wonders they are known for are disappearing due to the ongoing climate crisis. Saving the nation’s 63 national parks has not only become a political fight, but also an economic one. Climate Swing: Will parks be out of bounds as climate change worsens? No matter where you are in the country, your playgrounds—and your kids—are feeling the effects of climate change, whether it’s extreme heat, fires, floods, storm surges or lack of sufficient tree canopy and shade. Urban planners, citizens and scientists are finding ways to transform our parks into climate-resilient oases that can also help mitigate the effects of climate change and resulting extreme weather. This week, Inside Climate News, along with Borderless Magazine and Cicero Independiente, collaborated on Climate Swing, a project led by the Institute for Nonprofit News examining the effects of climate change and environmental injustice on parks, green spaces and playgrounds across the country. https://lnkd.in/ghfZ9BYg

🌊 Unprecedented Low Ice Cover in the Great Lakes: A Climate Change Alarm This winter, the #GreatLakes are experiencing historically low ice coverage, a concerning sign of changing climate conditions. With just 2.7% coverage, the implications for the environment and industries are profound. This anomaly, influenced by #ClimateChange and El Niño, presents challenges for the shipping industry and raises serious environmental concerns. The decrease in ice cover by 5% per decade is a stark reminder of the need for adaptive strategies in environmental management and policy-making, emphasizing the crucial role of stakeholders like environmental researchers, policymakers, and local communities in addressing these shifts https://lnkd.in/dujQjsHy

FOREST MANAGEMENT
Forest fires are in the news right now, and the media will once again tell you it's all caused by climate change. First of all, that's far from certain -- there are fewer forest fires now than in the late 1980s. Secondly, even if it were true, we can't change the climate on our own. Instead of virtue signalling, Canadian politicians should be focusing on better forest management to limit the spread of wildfires.

To my Bay Area folks, Check out this 45 minute documentary on how our changing climate is going to impact us in the Bay Area over the next few decades. It covers rising temperatures to coastal erosion, the impact on agriculture to infrastructure and adaptation. It was produced by our local news station, ABC 7 Bay Area. What would it look like if more local news stations did similar deep dives, highlighting the changes and opportunities so that people can learn how to manage, adapt, and support climate action in their area? https://lnkd.in/gew4gVv4 #sanfrancisco #bayarea #climateaction
