SUN PROTECTION IS NOT A ONE-SIZE-FITS -ALL MATTER ! Back in 2014, a team of researchers (Dr Ophelia E. Dadzie, Professors Nina Jablonski, Meera Mahalingam and Alain Dupuy, and Dr Antoine Petit), challenged the status quo in a letter published in the Journal of American Academy of Dermatology. They argued that a 'one-size-fits-all' strategy towards sun protection isn't scientifically sound, and highlighted the need for a more personalized and nuanced approach when it comes to sun protection public messaging. While initially seen as controversial, it's heartening to see more dermatologists rallying behind this cause, especially given our evolving understanding about the impact of the sun (UV) on human health and the many tools currently in development to accurately classify the diversity of human skin colours-this potentially includes a tool such as the Eumelanin Human Skin Colour Scale (EHSCS).
