Rather than act as a swaggering great power that could shore up illiberal leaders, Moscow has been outed as a government that can do neither.

Lots of food for thought in this insightful article. Not much chance of Russia threading the needle toward peaceful cooperation with the West any time soon. Place your bets on Russia retrenching into a poorer and more isolated authoritarian version of itself, descending into chaos, or becoming a Chinese vassal, with the possibility of traveling down all of those roads simultaneously. Kotkin hits the nail on the head in explaining the ingredients of Russian systemic weaknesses. "Russia's foreign policy delivers at best tactial gains, not strategic ones: no enhanced human capital, no assured access to leading-edge technology, no inward investment and new infrastructure, no improved governance, and no willing mutually obliged treaty allies, which are the keys to building and sustaining modern power. Besides raw materials and political thuggery, the only things Russia exports are talented people." https://lnkd.in/gRaCdwQS

Russia ready for talks with Ukraine, but needs to know who is trustworthy there — Putin The Russian leader stressed that it was politicians in Kiev who "withdrew from the negotiation process" as soon as troops were pulled back from Kiev HARBIN, May 17/ Russia has never refused to negotiate with Ukraine - unlike Kiev - but now it is necessary to understand who can be done business with and who is trustworthy there, President Vladimir Putin told Russian journalists accompanying him on his visit to China. He recalled that Moscow "never refused to negotiate," it was politicians in Kiev who "withdrew from the negotiation process" as soon as troops were pulled back from Kiev. "We were deceived once again," Putin said. "Now we have to understand who we should do business with and how. Who and to what extent we can trust. And, of course, we are now analyzing everything that is happening on this track." Putin recalled that when Russian troops were near Kiev, the Western partners insisted on their pullback: "No documents can be signed if the opposite side puts a gun to your temple," they argued. "The next day they threw our agreements into the dustbin and said, 'Well, now we will fight to the end’," Putin recalled. "And their Western handlers took the position now known to the whole world: Russia is to be defeated on the battlefield, to be made suffer a strategic defeat. We are not the ones who behaved this way. #business #finance #financialservices

Putin Likely Didn't Directly Order Navalny's Death, But it Fits Kremlin's Brutal Pattern Alexei Navalny, Russia's most prominent opposition leader, died in February at age 46 while imprisoned on what were widely viewed as trumped-up charges. His death sparked global outrage and accusations that Russian President Vladimir Putin had ordered his political assassination. However, a senior U.S. intelligence official told The Wall Street Journal on Sunday that Putin likely did not directly order Navalny's death. The official said while Putin bears ultimate responsibility as Russia's leader, investigations have not uncovered a direct link showing he was aware of the specifics or timing of Navalny's demise in custody. This assessment aligns with President Biden's remarks after Navalny's death, condemning Putin as responsible but not claiming he explicitly ordered the killing, citing unknown details. The lack of a "smoking gun" directly implicating Putin tracks with the view commonly held among U.S. intelligence agencies, the official stated. Navalny's persecution and subsequent death in prison fit a clear pattern of the Kremlin ruthlessly silencing dissidents and critics under Putin's authoritarian rule. Navalny had been a thorn in Putin's side for years, exposing corruption through his investigations. In 2020, he was poisoned with a nerve agent in an attack the West blamed on Russian security services. After recovering, he was arrested in 2021 on parole violation charges dismissed by rights groups as politically motivated. Russian authorities insist Navalny died of natural causes. But his death underscores the extreme lengths Putin has gone to retaliate against those challenging his 20-plus year grip on power in Russia. While U.S. intelligence may lack direct evidence Putin greenlit Navalny's killing, his demise represents another chilling example of the brutal treatment Russia's opposition faces under Putin's regime. #Navalny #Putin #Russia #Kremlin #PoliticalPrisoner #Dissident #Poisoning #Retaliation #Persecution #Crackdown #NoFreePress #AuthoritarianRule #HumanRights Reference Read "Putin likely didn’t order Navalny’s death, says US intelligence official: report" on SmartNews:

"Now, there is one more crucial step that we can take: making Russia pay for Ukraine’s recovery and reconstruction. What Putin destroyed, Russia should – and must – pay to rebuild. It’s what international law demands; it’s what the Ukrainian people deserve. Our Congress has given us the power to seize Russian assets in the United States. We intend to use it. We’re working with our G7 partners to see that Russia’s immobilized sovereign assets are used to remedy the damage that Putin continues to cause. The G7 can unlock billions of dollars – and send a powerful message to Putin that time is not on his side." Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken https://lnkd.in/e8nWF5uC

An important factor to consider is that Yanukovych was elected in 2010 because he promised a path towards the EU. By 2013 this promise solidified in the form of the association agreement with the EU. The parliament of Ukraine approved the agreement with the overwhelming majority of 319 votes out of 349 in May 2013. At the time Crimea had tourism offices in several European cities and Crimea was awaiting tourists from Europe. When Putin pressured president Yanukovych to abandon the deal with the EU and accept his terms in late 2013 winter was coming and cutting off gas to heat homes and fuel industry were rational concerns for Ukraine's president. Putin clearly expected massive protests because parliament was not consulted in the decision to choose the Eurasian Union over the EU. Yanukovych's political power was destroyed by Putin. Yanukovych was opposed to Russia's seizure of Crimea and his political base was in the Donbas. The shooting of a large number of people by snipers doomed Yanukovych and he fled Kyiv. Russian agents in unmarked uniforms and forced the parliament of Crimea to vote for a referendum at gunpoint. In May 2013 a poll of Crimeans preferences showed - - 53% preferred to be an autonomous, self-governing region of Ukraine - 22% preferred to be part of Russia - 20% preferred independence After Russian agents engineered the annexation of Crimea Igor Girkin aka Strelkov, a Russian agent from Moscow, was sent to the Donbas to start the insurrection. Strelkov boasted to Russian media that the people of the Donbas did not want to fight until he, Strelkov, made war unavoidable. Russia knows how to train such agents.

Ending Ukrainian conflict serves US interests — Trump NEW YORK, September 11/ US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump did not answer the question whether Washington benefits from the Kiev authorities' victory in the conflict in Ukraine, saying instead that it is in the US interests to end the fighting and reach a peace deal. "I think it’s the US best interest to get this war (the Ukrainian conflict - TASS) finished and just get it done - negotiate a deal because we have to stop all of these human lives being destroyed," he said in response to a related question from the host of the televised debate with Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris. He has also criticized incumbent President Joe Biden for the lack of contacts with Russia on the settlement of the Ukrainian conflict. "[US President Joe] Biden had no idea how to talk to [his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin]. He had no idea how to stop it (the Ukrainian conflict - TASS), and now you have millions of people dead, and it’s only getting worse," Trump said at a televised debate with US Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris, pointing out that he allegedly has good relations with both Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart Vladimir Zelensky, which will allow him to settle the conflict as soon as he is elected president. #business #finance #financialservices
