Oxford’s Border Criminologies, Mobile Info Team and the Border Violence Monitoring Network just launched a brand new, open-source interactive database. Detention Landscapes pools evidence from testimonies, open-source research, incident reports, and visual material to unveil the systemic nature of abuse in the facilities used to accommodate and return refugees, migrants and asylum seekers in Greece. Professor Mary Bosworth, from the University of Oxford, says the database aims to “bring to light the conditions and abuses happening within secretive detention sites - ultimately so that perpetrators and governments can be held to account.” The description of the Samos CCAC highlights the contrast between the EU's promises of "dignified reception conditions" and the actual daily violations of human rights inside the facility. Emphasis is put on: ❌ The lack of access to services due to the remote location of the facility; ❌ The automatic and unlawful detention of people upon arrival in the facility; ❌ The lack of safety and privacy in unlockable containers; ❌ The high-security infrastructures that make people refer to the CCAC as a "prison"; ❌ The inhuman and degrading living conditions; ❌ Physical and psychological violence inflicted on residents. DJT is once again pushing cruel, inhumane policies—this time proposing to detain immigrants at Guantanamo Bay. Let’s be clear: this is wrong on every level. Guantanamo Bay is infamous for human rights abuses, indefinite detentions, and mistreatment of prisoners—many of whom were never even charged with a crime. Now, he wants to use it as a holding facility for asylum seekers—people fleeing violence, persecution, and instability, searching for safety and a better life. This isn’t about border security. This is about dehumanization. It’s about treating vulnerable people as threats rather than human beings with rights and dignity. Seeking asylum is not a crime, and detaining people in a facility known for torture and abuse is beyond cruel—it's a blatant violation of human rights. We’ve seen this playbook before: He is once again relying on fear-mongering and scapegoating immigrants to rally his base. America should be a country that upholds human rights, compassion, and justice, not one that treats human beings like criminals and locks them away in a place synonymous with torture. "The facility Trump described in Guantánamo Bay would potentially leave immigrant detainees with even less access to consular and legal services than they currently have in U.S. immigration jails. And the use of military bases has raised concern among ICE officials and immigrant advocates regarding the adaptation of barracks that do not meet detention and safety standards for secure facilities." Reject cruelty. Reject fear. Stand up for human rights.

📢 Today Mobile Info Team, Border Criminologies and the Border Violence Monitoring Network present evidence on ongoing human rights violations in Greek pre-removal detention centres to the Council of Europe’s Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT). Evidence from testimonies gathered between 2023-2024 points to systemic issues - including unhygienic and overcrowded accommodation, poor quality food, and extremely limited access to medical care and legal aid. In particular, reports of violence against detainees at the hands of authorities working in pre-removal centres is extremely concerning and must be properly investigated. These findings come after years of CPT visits, reports and recommendations which have been ignored by the Greek authorities, allowing abuses to continue with impunity for perpetrators. We assert that the conditions in which people are held could amount to torture or inhuman and degrading treatment and call on the CPT to take all available action to put pressure on the Greek authorities to end these violations.
