Our ability to have thriving communities now and in the future hinges upon our ability to access clean water. The challenges are mounting, though: aging water systems across the nation require costly repairs in the face of tightening local budgets, and climate changes are creating more natural hazards that threaten water system stability. The CEE engineers at Rice are conducting research that directly addresses these challenges, helping to give our communities their best chance at a resilient future. CEE Professors Qilin Li, Leonardo Dueñas-Osorio, and Lauren Stadler are among the authors of a recent study published in Nature Water that examines "how water and wastewater system could be more resilient with the development of hybrid urban water supply systems that combine conventional, centralized water sources with reclaimed wastewater." Qilin Li notes "that such a system is also more resilient against disruptive events such as hurricanes and flooding. It exhibits lower severity, range of impact and duration of substandard performance when disruption happens.” Furthermore, Leonardo Duenas-Osorio explains that “[u]sing Houston’s municipal water system as a case study [allowed them to explore] the impact of various disruptions including pump station failures, pipe leakage and source water contamination."
