One of the very first investments I ever made was in a company called Vettery, led by two founders from U of Florida who worked their way from Wall Street to running a tech-enabled recruiting company
When I did that deal, a senior GP who I was trying to syndicate the deal with told me “these guys aren’t founders, you don’t know what youre doing”
2 years later, they sold that company > $100m
Today, one of those founders announced a round at a $2.6b valuation and the other runs a public company
Dont let your bias on pedigrees or archetypes prevent you from seeing the greatness underneath the surface

Why would a #franchisesalesmanager visit existing franchisees? Isn’t that the role of #Operations?
IMO, #franchisedevelopment is NOT just a synonym for #franchisesales. Also IMO, if your company only uses the term “#sales” to refer to the team that recruits new #franchisees, you’re missing the bigger picture. And it sets the wrong tone within your organization.
But what are we developing exactly?
✅ the franchise network
✅ the franchisee-franchisor relationship
✅ the culture regarding expansion
✅ cross-functional team collaboration and communication
✅ the brand
It’s not rocket science. If your company is only seeking to sell as many territories as possible without giving serious thought to the sustainability of both your new and existing #franchisees, you’re headed for disaster. Maybe not today. But inevitably.
Here’s what happens:
❌ Increasingly disenfranchised franchisees (see what I did there?) who do not feel connected to the franchisor
❌ Poor validation when prospective franchisees conduct their due diligence, resulting in low franchise sales
❌ Slow growth trajectories of the new and sometimes the existing franchises
❌ Increasing number of resales and non-renewals (by the franchisee)
Here’s how to expand the correct way.
✅ Overlay your franchisees’ geo-coded sales data onto a map of existing and proposed territories to understand to what extent your current locations are servicing the market. This should be ongoing.
✅ Meet with franchisees, individually and in groups, to share data on a regular basis, review your analyses, and gather additional insights from their perspectives (i.e., the local competitive landscape). Ideally, this is primarily an Operations/Business Coach role, but it requires transparency and collaboration among all departments (i.e., Fran Dev, Marketing, Training)
✅ Use the meetings with franchisees to establish and maintain a mutually beneficial plan with clear targets, and take actions to address underserviced markets via a combination of training, marketing, and adding new locations as the situation requires.
For goodness sake, go and see your people in the field. Let them know that every member of your head office team appreciates them, values them, and is there to support them. And if you’re open to it, THEY might even teach YOU a thing or two.

The best part about travelling to trade shows across the US is having the chance to visit some of our great franchisees. This past week while in Chicago, we visited our Northern Illinois Chief Mad Scientist, Cosmic Kathy. We had the chance to meet her awesome team and visit this amazing location. A big thank you to Kathy and her staff! Keep up with all your great work with kids in your community!

Biome is a community of true givers intending to elevate your circle and business - Amit Gupta™, CEO, Techginia, shared his thoughts about The Renous Biome
Restraint and other unlicensed crisis management strategies
I was talking to my colleague Andy Prisco who works in the US. I described restraint and seclusion as effectively unlicensed interventions. Goverment bodies like the FDA and its equivelant around the world would not license training and use of such methods based on evidence. It is true that It is custom and practice that people accept these and other crisis management practices as a part of supporting people who challenge.
The reality is that these are in effect unlicensed interventions with little evidence base. Each year huge numbers of staff and other supporters are trained in physical interventions with little evidence for the effectiveness of such training.
The over use of these methods and the emphasis on training staff in ,'socially acceptable pseudo martial arts' needs to stop.

In light of Ashurst's global launch of Harvey and our entry into our #GenAI era, I wanted to share a quote from Marc Lauristen that resonated with me:
"Technology is a tool; innovation is a goal. There are other tools and other goals, but these two are among the most important at this point in history. Sometimes technology catalyses true innovation; sometimes meaningful innovation opens the door to transformational technology. It's a complicated relationship, like many human ones."
This quote encapsulates why I'm passionate about #NewLaw. The interplay between technology and innovation is reshaping our field in profound ways, and I am thrilled to be part of this transformative journey at Ashurst.
