⬇ About our project, Small4Good. 🇪🇺 16 million small #forestowners represent approximately 60% of Europe’s #forest area, and their actions are crucial for achieving #biodiversity and #ecosystem goals outlined in the #EUForestStrategy and the #EuropeanGreenDeal. 🤔 But how do we engage these owners due to their small property size, limited capacities, and knowledge of often inactive managers? Our Small4Good vision! 💶 We aim to enable small-forest owners to safeguard #biodiversity and enhance #ecosystemservices from Europe’s forests. They would do this by developing multifunctional and locally adapted management models. All of these backed by #paymentsforecosystemservices (PES) schemes and endorsed through #digital- and #AI-based solutions. 📋 To ensure long-term impact, we’re aligning our models with the personal motivations of forest owners alongside the diverse #ecosystem and #socioeconomic conditions across #Europe. We’re adopting a co-creation approach via multi-actor #livinglabs in four European regions for rapid prototyping, implementation, and acceptability. 👀 Stay tuned to follow our #transdisciplinary team of experts and stakeholder representatives over the next four years to support small-scale forest owners in implementing sustainable and multifunctional forest management. I am the general manager and owner of Trek and Ride, travel agency specialised in cycling and hiking holidays
Last Friday, #TrekandRide attended a seminar on the DigiMedFor project, organized by #CREAF. CREAF is involved in this project, and its objective is to increase the competitiveness of the forest timber supply chain in the Mediterranean basin, thanks to a deep transformation of its technological reality. This involves implementing advanced and innovative digital solutions. This improves the management of multiple forest ecosystem services (benefits provided by nature) such as carbon sequestration, biodiversity conservation, and water cicle regulation, while facilitating the traceability of the origin of timber from the forest to the end user. The Mediterranean region includes more than 25 million hectares of forests and approximately 50 million hectares of other wooded territories. Climate changes and the effect of socio-economic activity in this region point to serious consequences for forests, which would entail the loss of various ecosystem services with economic, environmental and social effects. The low competitiveness of the forest timber supply chain in the countries of the European Mediterranean basin (EUMED) is currently amplified by limited access to new digital technologies by the people in charge of forest management companies. This limitation means that the timber industry in the Mediterranean area will experience a growth and evolution in the coming decades below what is desirable and feasible. For this reason, DigiMedFor aims to digitise the sector, with a multi-faceted approach aimed at different professionals and fields. You can read the whole article here: https://lnkd.in/dWU3Mvvx #sustainability #sustainabletourism #TrekandRide supports CREAF financially and as an ambassador because we believe it is of the utmost urgency that the tourism sector gets involved in the conservation of our natural environment. www.trekandride.com

🌱 Proud to have participated and spoken at #LANDSCAPE2024: Agroecosystems in Transformation – Visions, Technologies, and Actors! With great Masterclass and workshop I had the opportunity to engage in stimulating discussions and contribute to insightful sessions in both a Masterclass and a Workshop that focused on the future of agricultural ecosystems and research. These sessions deepened my understanding of the complex, interdisciplinary nature of agroecosystem transformation, while offering new tools and perspectives for shaping sustainable agricultural practices. 🔬 Masterclass: Representation of the Biodiversity–Land Use Nexus in Integrated Land Use Models at Landscape Level: Developing an Agenda for Future Research Convenors: Martin Schönhart, Federal Institute of Agricultural Economics, Rural and Mountain Research, Austria Robert Huber Huber, Agricultural Economics and Policy, ETH Zürich, Switzerland Klaus Mittenzwei, Ruralis – Institute for Rural and Regional Research, Trondheim/Oslo, Norway In this session, we explored the critical link between biodiversity and land use at the landscape level, emphasizing the role of integrated land use models (ILM) in supporting agricultural transformations. Biodiversity loss, largely driven by agricultural activities, poses a significant challenge, yet agriculture itself is a key sector affected by these changes. A central takeaway was the importance of using Bio-Economic Farm Models (BEFM) to analyze biodiversity as both an influencer of farm incomes (e.g., provisioning services) and a responder to land use changes. Key Learnings: - BEFM models offer a framework to simulate and predict how farm-level decisions impact biodiversity and farm profitability. - The importance of leveraging new technologies such as remote sensing to address data gaps and enhance model precision. - The need for an interdisciplinary approach to integrate ecological, economic, and social dimensions into land use planning and policy. This session laid the groundwork for a future research agenda that will refine these models, ensuring they accurately capture the complexity of agroecosystems and support sustainable decision-making. 🌾Workshop: Cultivating Your Research with a Transformative Agroecological Lens Agroecology, often misinterpreted in various contexts, requires a systemic approach that integrates ecological, economic, and social sustainability in agriculture. This workshop, using the Walthall et al. (2024) framework, provided practical tools to align research and projects with a transformative agroecological vision. Key takeaways included strategies to apply systemic agroecological principles and safeguard agroecology's transformative potential through reflection and practical exercises. #Agroecology #Biodiversity #Sustainability #LandUse #AgricultureTransformation #AcademicResearch #IntegratedModels #RemoteSensing #Agroecosystems

📅 Bilbao General Assembly: A meeting of minds to define the future of #agriculture at the heart of the #AI4SoilHealth project 🌱 🎯 From 24-26 January, Bilbao became the place where one of the most important European-funded projects reached an ongoing #milestone: the AI4SoilHealth project. 🌿 Using cutting-edge #AI tools to monitor and predict #soilhealth, the project will provide farmers and land managers with accurate predictions of the health of their soils, enabling them to make informed decisions. 🌻 Responding to the #climateemergency by mapping the future of soil health and ensuring communities have the strategy they need to innovate their #agricultural practices is the real challenge of the project. Together, the project partners are finding solutions to reverse a dangerous trend: It's estimated that 60-70% of EU soils are in a vulnerable or unhealthy state. 👥 As ISINNOVA, we're one of the 28 partners working to reverse this trend. Our main role is to facilitate the science-policy #dialogue and work with #stakeholders to turn data into action. This is why we were involved in two working sessions at the Bilbao meeting: ✅ "Soil health indicator framework of AI4SoilHealth" to agree on an overarching #framework for the assessment of soil health. ✅ "Soil districts and monitoring systems in an evolving stakeholder landscape". 🍃 Our aim is to ensure that the application of current and future soil-related policies is as fruitful as the soils they aim to protect. 🗣Your insights and engagement can help us cultivate a healthier, more sustainable world. Let's grow this conversation - the future of our soils depends on it! 🌱 Visit the project website here ➡ https://bit.ly/3ude7Kt Giovanna Giuffrè | Loredana Marmora | Valentina Malcotti | Soil Association | Aarhus University | Thünen Institute | Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) / Luonnonvarakeskus (Luke) | Roma Tre University | RegenEarth Studio | University of Basel | University of Aberdeen | Stockholms universitet | NEIKER INSTITUTO VASCO DE INVESTIGACION Y DESARROLLO AGRARIO SA | International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) | ETH Zürich | UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH) | Planet Labs Inc. | MultiOne | OpenGeoHub Foundation | The Centre for Agricultural Research (ATK) | Aalborg University (AAU) | Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) | Sorbonne University | Berner Fachhochschule BFH (HAFL) | Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) #AI4SoilHealth #SustainableAgriculture #SoilHealth #Innovation #ISINNOVA #EnvironmentalSustainability #AgricultureTech #EUpolicy #ClimateCrisis #Bilbao2024
