CSAA Insurance Group, a AAA Insurer recently marked the one-year anniversary of the announcement of a $25M investment in the California Wildfire Innovation Fund. The Fund, developed by CSAA in partnership with Blue Forest, is a climate-solutions strategy that aims to decrease the severity and frequency of catastrophic wildfires by supporting forest restoration-related economic development.   Several notable initiatives supported by the fund are underway to realize the stated goals of climate resilience and economic growth:   ➡️ Heartwood Biomass: The new facility in Tuolumne County will convert forest restoration byproducts, a potential wildfire fuel, into firewood bundles, wood chips and agricultural posts. ➡️ Tahoe Forest Products LLC: TFP supports regional hazardous fuels reduction goals by providing a sustainable outlet for timber sourced from local restoration projects as well as salvaged from wildfire-affected areas. ➡️ BurnBot, Inc.: A winner in CSAA’s Climate Resiliency Challenge, BurnBot enables mechanized vegetation management and fuel treatment solutions to prevent destructive wildfires.   For more information about the California Wildfire Innovation Fund, visit www.blueforest.org.

Nature-based carbon solutions are necessary, in demand, and here to stay. Green Assets’ active conservation projects allow landowners to generate long-term revenue by keeping and managing their forests as forests. Exciting to see carbon in the news in the Sunshine State.

This article has been discredited as seriously factually inaccurate by various sources. This inaccuarcy firsts jumps out at the reader in the absolute clanger of an opening phrase: "Much of the Brazilian Amazon rainforest is safeguarded behind a green shield of publicly protected land". Conservation Units in Brazil represent 18.5% of the Legal Amazon and Indigenous Territories 23%: total = 41.5% (under half, far from"much of") (source: Imazon) . But then there's the critical point that even in those areas, protection is not effective. There are literally thousands of sources showing this, but most incredibly, the WaPo itself reported this fact in 2022 here, see point "3. Those accused of destroying the forest are often the very ones charged with protecting it" (https://lnkd.in/eseBADtq). Or Mongabay's 2023 article "In Brazil's Amazon,  a ‘new agricultural frontier’ threatens protected land". Open and informed debates on climate issues are critically important, but unless the quality of reporting improves - notably its ability to accurately synthesize complex problems, and show both sides of an argument - this will not be possible.

Publicly owned resources can suffer from what is known as the “tragedy of the commons.” Without any individual ownership, users of the resource are incentivized to use as much as they can today without considering how to conserve the resource for later use. The thinking is, “if I can’t depend on other users to conserve the resource for tomorrow, I should extract what I can today.” Applying property rights to a share of a common resource, however, changes the incentive structure. “Because I have ownership over a share of the resource, I know others won’t deplete my share today. As a result, I’m encouraged to conserve my share to ensure my future use.” This concept lies at the heart of PERC’s unique approach to conservation.
