A new study suggests that restoring global forests could capture an additional 226 gigatons of carbon. With this restoration, approximately one third of human carbon emissions since the Industrial Era began would be captured by trees. While forest restoration is a priority, the study emphasizes the need to cut greenhouse gas emissions in order to restore effectively. An insightful and comprehensive article in Bloomberg outlining the current challenges with peatland restoration funding and the Science Based Targets initiative (STBi) classification of peatland restoration as 'emission avoidance'. It is not just the climate crisis, it is the all-round environmental crisis. Focusing on carbon emissions and carbon taxes on fuel is missing so much of what the real problems and issues are. It is clear there is no plan at any level of government, only sound bites, platitudes and virtue signalling.

Old growth forests are worth more intact than being clear cut for timber. It’s a short-term gain selling public lands to the highest bidder at a long-term loss. You could argue that trees grow back, and that’s true, but nothing can replace 500-1000+ year old trees and the ecosystems they support.
