A day in the life of Retail. When I was in corporate and had a job interview, I always got the same question about my resume: “You managed Eddiebauer stores? What was that like?” People are fascinated if you have management experience at a storied and cherished brand. Working at Brooks Brothers as an Assistant Store Manager is no different. Actually, running a store is a lot like running a business. Because it IS a business that someone has entrusted to you to run. Retail is a great training/proving ground for building a knowledge and experience base in sales, project management, relationship building, hiring, human resources, merchandising, inventory control…the list is endless. What I love best about running a store, is the opportunity to leave my footprint on a business with my creativity and sales performance. I haven’t posted recently about my day job, so here’s an update!! Yesterday we officially opened the 3rd brick and mortar location! Crazy right? In ONE year we have opened three completely new stores starting from less than nothing to be fully built, stocked, merchandised, staffed, and operating. This experience has been somewhat of a challenge, yet in my opinion has also been a fairly easy achievement. And no, it hasn’t been easy in the sense that it’s easy work or a simple feat to undertake. You see, it’s all about how you approach things. If you approach things with the confidence that you can accomplish any task necessary, you and your staff will not only be more effective at doing so, but it will be more fulfilling as well.

Stock counts in Retail... Who loves them who hates them? Me, I hated them. At Sainsbury's, we used to work late until it was completed. Sometimes midnight, 1am 2am. Well over our expected working hours. The best part was the free pizza we'd be treated to (or I'd treat my team to when I was a Store Manager) Little things aye... But like stock counts in Retail, when did you last take stock of yourself? Not how many cars, houses or watches you own. But yourself - your skills, abilities and valuable life experience. We keep our stores in check regularly but we don't spend time on ourselves. And it is a problem many Retail Managers face when they hit the job market. They enter the market not knowing enough about their worth and what they have to offer other employers. Yet they have much more to offer than they give themselves credit for if only they spent a bit more time thinking about it... Just like learning to drive a car, it's a complex skill to learn initially, but eventually, you go into autopilot. It feels easy now, and you take it for granted. And that's how Retail Managers treat their skills and experience. Skills that are extremely valuable and command significant roles and salaries. They take them for granted and then don't shout enough about them. In their CVs, applications and interviews. Here are a few questions you can ponder to get yourself started... What are you the best at? What are the top three skills you love using at work? What are your top three Retail achievements? What do you want to get better at this year? How much value financially do you contribute to your store based on what you do? Answer these questions and you'll be much more prepared before you hit the job market. ------- Loved this post? "No experience necessary" why do companies say this when they post in Indeed. I need a company to give me a chance. I am a responsible and trustworthy person who applies to everything I see on line that states "no experience needed". What more can I do? I need a company who lives by their Inclusion and Diversity statements. Just saying you are willing to accept applicants with a disability and actually giving someone a chance is two different things. I have Asperger Syndrome, I am more than willing to complete the tasks outlined in the job descriptions but I get zero response, Why. Loblaw Companies Limited McDonald's Walmart Canadian Tire Subway Dennigers...can someone explain what more I can do to obtain employment. I want to work, just need someone to give me a chance to prove myself.
