To my fellow software engineers! This a GREAT article that discusses the difference between being an "engineer" and being a "technician". This is the kind of subtle difference that can easily be missed until you give it a name. In short, it makes the following claims: Engineers, look for ways to automate repetitive manual labor. They continually seek out new problems to solve and take risks. Technicians, step in the place of automation. Redoing the same process over and over. Think, adding another parsing strategy to your ETL process. Being a technician can feel safe as the challenges and solutions are well known, but it's a false sense of security and it stifles growth. What separates junior, mid-level, and senior engineers, apart from years of experience? One essential quality is their ability to resolve AMBIGUITY in different aspects of a task. Ambiguity can reside in various aspects. 1️⃣ Requirements Ambiguity For example, "Build a feature to track delivery trucks" lacks details about how the app should function for the end user. 2️⃣ Implementation Ambiguity A more detailed request like "Build an Android app that provides real-time geolocation reporting for delivery truck drivers, accurate to within 30 seconds and 10 meters, and resilient to connection issues" has clearer requirements. However, it still leaves questions about the infrastructure, techniques for handling lost data, and methods for collecting location information with the required accuracy. 3️⃣ Spotting Flaws, Assumptions and Asking Questions Many times, the requirements need to be corrected or more feasible. For instance, can Android even record data with 10-meter accuracy? They dig deeper, uncover the actual requirements and specifications, and execute accordingly. Junior Engineers All types of ambiguity must be clearly defined for them in the task. Mid-Level Engineers  Mid-level engineers might need a senior's clarification on requirements/assumptions and guidance on higher-level implementation. Still, they can figure out how to handle implementation tasks like caching data locally and replaying it once the network is restored. Senior Engineers Seniors still need requirements clarified, but they can provide feedback on what's possible and practical within the required time frame. For example, if Android can't retrieve location data more granular than 100 meters (just a hypothetical figure), they might suggest adjusting the requirements to ensure the project's success. They also have the expertise to give clear implementation instructions (what libraries and methodologies to use, etc.) to mid-level and junior engineers. #softwareengineering

A lot of people wonder what the differences are between systems engineers and software engineers. This article goes into depth about the key differences, but it's important to note that both jobs can differ drastically based on your employer or even the project/program. One key difference I've personally noticed is that systems engineers work at the macroscopic level and software engineers often work at the microscopic level. If you prefer to impact the overall big picture of a system, you will most likely see more of that as a systems engineer. If you prefer working with highly technical finer details, software engineering may be a better fit.

Growing as an engineer: The reality and misconception of 10x engineers The common description of a 10x engineer is one that’s extremely efficient, that can produce ten times more work than a normal engineer – these exist in specific areas. For example I would expect an engineer that specialized in JVM performance to be 10 times (if not more) more efficient than me when it comes to debugging such performance issues (since I have neither the knowledge nor the tools at my disposal). I think it’s more interesting to define these 10x engineers through their impact instead. This is possible as soon as you work in large engineering organizations. For example if an engineer makes 100 engineers 10% more efficient (e.g. by making the dev loop 10% faster), their net impact is the same as hiring 10 engineers, so they technically have ten times the impact of one engineer. There are engineers that are paid 10 times more than others, and while it might be an effect of the job market, I think these are mostly paid a lot because of their impact through other engineers – not because of their actual code/design throughput. The most important part of this post is that 10x engineers aren’t isolated engineers. They aren’t your selfish engineer hiding in a dark room writing code. They are the ones that share their knowledge, promote better tools and up-level their whole engineering org.
