Bill McKibben titles his most recent post to Substack “An odd silence” What I find odd in the climate conversation is silence about the threshold question, of money. Bill writes about “the speed of our response” There is an unstated, and therefor unexamined, assumption here, that we know how to respond. But do we, really? Do we really have a sufficiently correct, engineering grade, root cause analysis of the actions that we are taking that are setting in motion the consequences that we want to avoid?  Science is sharing much new learning about the geobiochemistry and geothermodynamic connections between energy extraction from hydrocarbons and habitat longevity. That learning is showing us the need to rapidly redesign and reconfigure our global energy supply ecosystems - both core technologies and supporting infrastructures- to replace habitat geoengineering energy extraction from hydrocarbons with new energy technologies that will not geoengineer habitats on earth that humans cannot inhabit. That will cost money. Lots and lots of money. A uniquely special kind of money that is purpose-built for prudent stewardship of a dignified future, with the mission, the duty and the scale to take control of enough of our existing global energy supply ecosystem to overcome inertial resistance and convert it to co-operation in the redesign and reconstruction that is necessary for habitat and human longevity. Where are we going to find that money? Because without that money, nothing is going to get done until the whole thing actually does collapse. By then, will it be too late? Public Money does not have the scale. Mad Money in the Markets for financing Growth through speculation on market prices does not have the mission. Neither has the duty. We have to find another way. Can we talk sometimes about that?
