As adventure travel continues trending up, #REI takes another huge step back. In 2019 we collaborated on adventure programs across Asia with REI Adventures. In 2021 - with little notice to suppliers - they walked away from international programs to 'refocus' on domestic programs. Last week from the same playbook and "0" notice to employees another quick exit. Guessing that refocusing didn't pan out. Embracing the Tension: The Importance of Vacation I'm horrible for stepping away from work. Physically, I may be absent, mentally, I may be thinking of Grand Bay-Westfield (GBW). Since moving to GBW, the pace has been frantic as we have modernized the organization (getting there with a new ERP to be implemented shortly and implementing a structured records system with Government Frameworks Laserfische), positioned ourselves for socio-economic growth (we received HAF), influencing and preparing for local government reform and implementing it, and now part of the team trying to determine effective fiscal reform between the province and municipalities. Unfortunately, I find it easy to forget the value of taking a break, but a well-spent vacation can be transformative. Recently, I had the pleasure of reconnecting with both nature and culture during a much-needed getaway. I embarked on a 350 km cycling journey through the picturesque Acadienne Peninsula Veloroute. The experience was not just a test of endurance but also a reminder of the serenity and beauty that comes from slowing down and enjoying the journey—something I often overlook. I also have to admit that I miss CrossFit: going to the box after work allowed me to park my brain at the door for the rest of the day. Following this, I spent four enriching days in Boston, where I immersed myself in the arts at the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA), walked the historic Freedom Trail, and explored the intellectual hubs of Harvard and MIT. It was also a joy to connect with a friend and cousin, sharing stories and laughter that reminded me of the importance of personal connections. These experiences have reinforced my belief in the importance of taking time off to recharge and gain fresh perspectives. Whether it's through outdoor adventures or cultural explorations, vacations are not just a luxury—they are essential for maintaining our well-being and enhancing our professional performance.
