Far too many people find themselves weighed down by poverty's inescapable, oppressive grip on mental health. But what can we, as professionals, do to prevent and manage this problem? My latest article unpacks how the convergence of three key poverty-related stressors (noise disturbances, home dysfunction, and financial distress) fuels a cycle of anxiety, depression, and despair for low-income families. This toxic brew of physical, emotional, and financial strain traps mental health and dims hopes of escape. Andy Bell We're urging to Government to deliver on its manifesto pledge of a comprehensive and effective child poverty strategy, and this should coincide with a cross-government mental health plan. We know the situation for children growing up in poverty is dire, but there are tangible solutions which could improve families' mental health. We've set out a roadmap of what needs to be done to best support children's mental health over the next parliamentary session ⬇ For more on this roadmap and recommendations for lasting change: ➡https://lnkd.in/ddRf5Qrx #ADualCrisis #PovertyandPoorMentalHealth #MentalHealth #Government #NewGovernment #ChildPovertyStrategy

People with low income are 1.5-3 times more likely to experience depression or anxiety than the rich (Ridley et al., 2020). The relationship between poverty and poor mental health is bidirectional, meaning poverty makes you more likely to experience mental illness and mental illness makes you more likely to experience poverty, which makes it hard to break the cycle (Ridley et al., 2020). Poverty leads to poor mental health through loss of income shocks, volatile income/expenditures, living in inadequate housing in low-income neighborhoods, and early-life stressors (Ridley et al., 2020). Poor mental health leads to poverty through lost working days, unhelpful thought patterns, reduced concentration and greater fatigue leading to decreased productivity and hindered education. However, psychological interventions and anti-poverty programs and policies can improve mental health and economic status (Ridley et al., 2020). Together, they can be used to break the cycle of poverty and mental illness. #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthmatters #mentalhealth #Poverty #economy #income #depression #anxiety (Ridley et al., 2020) https://lnkd.in/e5Hfq8ue

The rising cost of living is placing immense pressure on mental health, especially for those in poverty. Increased financial strain leads to heightened stress, anxiety, and uncertainty about basic needs like housing and food. Poverty exacerbates these issues, with limited access to mental health support and systemic inequalities further compounding the challenges. Addressing the crisis requires policy changes focused on financial stability, affordable housing, and mental health resources, creating a more equitable society where individuals can thrive despite economic challenges.
