Super Bowl commercials serve as an excellent opportunity to gauge current trends or overused techniques in cinematography. Here are a few observations from 2024:
The wide and close lens. Ads shot primarily with wide lenses have been super popular in the past few years. I often see them keeping the camera closer to talent and shooting from a lower angle. Although this one may be beginning to phase out, I still quite like the look.
Color grading is leaning towards either a clean, bright, and natural look, or a split-tone, saturated, and low-contrast style.
Video walls were only noticeably used in two ads. This suggests that the industry is moving in the right direction by using them more subtly.
I was relieved to see less of that shot where the camera rapidly moves up into the talent's face, often handheld. This one has been extremely overused by now.
Most of the current trends I’m noticing seem to have been around for a while. I'm curious to see what techniques will emerge for the rest of the year. My prediction is we will see more snorri-cam shots, and camera movement that intentionally breaking of the fourth wall, for example, picking up the camera from the ground and framing it up during the shot.
This commercial was my overall favorite:

The tangible fascination of motorsports. Not many platforms combine the emotional attachment, the technological rivalry and the mass media reach like Formula One.
I have worked in the F1 series for many years and seen lots of people, brands and media interact. And I have also experienced the huge influence of "parts", e.g. tyres:
And that influence of technology will rise.
The contribution in terms of performance and sustainability as well as real life "from racetrack to road" development and knowledge transfer is a major asset.
Formula 1, Apple Original Films and Warner Bros. Pictures today revealed the title of the upcoming movie starring Brad Pitt, directed by Joseph Kosinski, and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and Joe Kosinski, will be F1.

If you can dream it, you can do it.
A man of very few words, Enzo Ferrari still remains a legend.
And, if you know anything about me, I have, as my girlfriend would say, a sickening obsession with Ferrari.
So, when today’s awwwards. Site of the Day landed to be the Ferrari Movie, it would have been completely out of nature to not say something about it.
A crisp, clean web design with impactful yet simplistic branding emulates what a Ferrari should be- Elegantly beautiful.
The use of solid red and black do not distract you from Mann’s stills of the motion picture. I have always felt there was something emotionally charging yet somewhat fortifying of the 2 tone colour system, wherever it's implementation.
Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication and in an era of quiet luxury, we needn’t have over complicated design.
Wonderful job, Antinomy Studio & 27b.
“Aerodynamics are for people who can’t build engines.” - Enzo Ferrari.
In the vibrant world of events, sports, and entertainment, few elements capture the imagination quite like a mascot. These larger-than-life characters don’t just represent a brand or a team; they embody its spirit, energize crowds, and create unforgettable memories. 🎥 It's #Oscars week...
The 96th Academy Awards are on Sunday, which means I get to write about the ceremony and a few of the races.
This is one of my favorite events of the year because it allows us to celebrate the power of film and movies.
It's also exciting to discuss and debate with other industry professionals and reflect on our favorites from the past year.
What were your favorite films from 2023?
Check out my predictions and a few of my favorite underrated films in the latest from The Backlot newsletter on #substack.
The Fender brand of electric guitar became a household name soon after Leo Fender invented it.
But by 2015, Fender faced stiff from competition from its arch rival Gibson as well as a sea of cheaper-but-quite-good brands like Japan's Yamaha.
To deal with this, Fender hired a hotshot CEO from Disney and set about all sorts of ways to boost their fortunes - including some not so legal methods...
Can you guess which strategy they chose?

𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗽𝗼𝗹𝘆: …𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮 𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗯𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱?
There are only two board games that I wanted to keep since I was a child: Risiko and Monopoly.
However, Monopoly is definitely the one that entertained me the most because of its dynamics related not only to luck but also to a certain amount of strategic skills in planning one's 'positioning' and becoming the richest in the city of Monopoly.
More than 50 years later, Lavinia Capresi post made me rethink this game from a different perspective, one that, honestly, I never considered.
The game mechanism, for those who don't remember it, (...very few), is based on entrepreneurial initiative in the real estate market, with the goal of growing one's capital, possibly shaking the pockets of competitors, facing odds and contingencies. Sometimes even coming to troubles with the law and being forced to stay in jail (!).
Never has such an old game turned out to still be so relevant!
But beyond that, among the many merits of Monopoly game, it is the fact that you can find similarities, many I would say, with the dynamics which companies today have to move in their market environment.
Let me give you a few examples:
Probability & Unforeseen: doesn't this remind you the SWOT analysis with threats and opportunities in the market environment?
Money management: it's the simplified version of cash flow management… and when you're negative it'over!
Buying/Selling properties: it was nothing different from managing tangible assets, with investments and divestments
Jail: the stop during the game doesn't seem analogous to a regulatory problem that forces you to stay out of a market until you have received the certification of your product?
…and so on.
Amazing isn't it?
I had never thought about it until I read this post and the news related to the preparation of the next movie by the producers of the movie Barbie.
Thanks to Hasbro and Lavinia Capresi for taking me back in time and to this fun reflection.
What feelings does Monopoly remind you of?
How about using it in your companies today, perhaps for teambuilding activities or to create fun in a sales effectiveness training program?
What do you think about Monopoly?
🎲 🎲 A movie on Monopoly 🎲 🎲
Entering its 90th anniversary in 2025, Monopoly carries a full heritage of stories and bits of our culture, families and players experiences, incredible icons, powerful values and insights and potentially infinite storytelling, that I am just thrilled to see how all this richness will turn into the movie content that has just been announced, pushing the brand outside the box and into an exciting future. 🚀
Full spotlight on Monopoly! It’s going to be BIG!
Here are the scores on the doors as we entered the weekend.
Barbie streams (😎) ahead, with 4.1m Oppenheimer on 2.6 but with a similar share of on-platform viewing - i.e. share of current subscribers.
Two important metrics to track over the coming weeks:
1 - Total views, both Barbie and Oppenheimer will see a boost in viewing due to Oscars publicity - but how much of a lead will the Best Picture (and 6 other awards) grant for Oppenheimer compared to an effective snub, only the Best Original Song win for Barbie.
2 - With Disney timing a range of discounts and offers across the globe, to tie in with Poor Things core streaming window, how many of these big budget titles will become the "first watched" show, i.e. how many subscribers will be drawn into a sub specifically because of these movies.
We'll check back in to reveal all, in a couple of weeks time once the data-dust has settled!
