I hate Zombie Advice. That is, advice that should have died a long time ago, yet continues to shamble through the industry, infecting others with the disease. I am on a mission to figure out if I've been giving it. "Get a job in help desk, then pivot to an engineering role in operations or cloud." I've been advising mentees to follow this path to get their careers in tech started, but I'm not sure if it still works in the aggregate. I got my first break in tech as an outsourced help desk operator in the middle of North Dakota in 1999. The products we supported gave us little documentation and even less training, so resolving calls fell mostly on our ability to research, troubleshoot, and share knowledge. Combined with my natural curiosity, I use these skills to quickly solve problems in my cloud and devops responsibilities. Since these areas of tech change rapidly, almost as fast as javascript frameworks, it's nearly impossible to be a deep expert for a long time. Research is king. I haven't done help desk in a long time, so I'm not exactly sure what the job looks like. I'm afraid that the process has been too commoditized and streamlined that the operators might not be building the skills I think they need to be successful later. I'm also worried that this process has reduced help desk's reputation in engineering circles to the point where it might be better off to not hold the job at all.
