PSA to our loyal Empathy Affect podcast listeners! Our next episode is taking a holiday break for the 4th of July. 24,000 words. So far. I’ve had an unexpected burst of creative energy over the last month. I didn’t plan to start writing Season 2 of Never Give Up: A Rare Disease Podcast (link is below) until after Rare Disease Day. But after getting some much needed rest over the holidays I was ready to write. “Light and shadow. Joy and pain.” That’s how I’m describing Season 2. Some stories are inspirational. Some reflect on history. And some… are explorations of darkness. It’s a mirror of life… a mixture of hope and despair, beauty and sadness. As with Season 1, some stories are from my life. Others, those I witnessed. And, new for this season, a few stories from history that inspire me deeply… stories that shaped who I am and how I view the world. 9 out of 10 episodes are written. One to go. Production begins in March, and I’ll be taking a break from releasing new episodes while I work on the season. And then, May 7, the journey will continue. A journey exploring the intersection of life, mental health, and rare disease. Never Give Up: A Rare Disease Podcast: https://lnkd.in/gtmC_Ztw

Our status as human - emergence and transitions in multilayered contexts, racial ideation can&does reduce&even destroys potential. As impressionable/developing humans, the contingencies/conditions of multilayered experiences are enacted in our sense of self/identity. Dominant frames of understanding can certainly add insult to injury, because dominant knowledge frames can make the fundamental attribution error/cognitive dissonance by locating systemic disadvantage as Individual deficiencies. NeuroPsych over-extrapolates data2fit its methodological frames of understanding&multimodal methods of averaging. Methodologies in ways of knowing diagnosis can spoil our identity. That reality does not stop the production of new psychological disorder construals4 far too many of our minority children&can end up with multiple dx(s). The multivalent transfers from powerful groups suits who? Whose agenda? For sure, there are legitimate diagnoses that are liberating, enhance self-efficacy in a significant way (eg Bipolar, ADHD, food, Cognitive learning etc). Assessment should not homogenise, it captures dimensions of invariant genetics. So, not all dx(s) are bad infinity. Re below, systemic adversities are about conditions of self-confidence, where we can unwittingly/wittingly cede ground2context as typed expected outcomes. The lack of social pillars in our status of knowing can be a vicious feedback loop. There is an expanding black 'middle class' but the gaps between the top& bottom are still severe as acute attainment gaps. In 2005 Professor Ilona Kickbusch, contended that “the crisis in global health is not a crisis of disease, it is a crisis of governance.” In other words, the inhibiting drivers of multivariate inequalities that can often rise to health issues, as we age, even more so-the ingrained blow back on our embodiment is more overt to us (eg law of diminishing returns/inflammation). There are individual differences re tolerating windows of tolerance, but, multiple adversities-height of the hurdles does inflict its mark on us, leaving one2many in precarious situations as we age. A life lived enduring many of these tariffs ought not be conflated with resilience. But there are those with perverse sense of humour who incorrectly think a person can be restored2some origin set point (eg inner child). This is just magical thinking&is simply not based on integrative&nuanced science. These are tough times for societies with multiple demands. There is a significant shift towards 'prevention is better than cure' recognising that federal funding2the tune of billons/trillions over decades has substantively missed target predictions. "Often, it puts the focus on individual as a biological body@the expense of factoring in systemic&infrastructural conditions" Danielle Carr is an assistant professor, Institute4Society&Genetics@U.C.L.A. Organisational complicity2suit agendas of large entities is simply not good enough

The Conflict Between School and Children’s Social Care: Our Latest Podcast is Live! 🎤 I’m really excited about this one. This month, Karylle and I come together to discuss the experiences of children in care at school. Being in care can be tough. Balancing school, attending meetings, and visiting parents isn’t just physically exhausting—it creates real practical challenges. What happens when you need to do your homework over the weekend, but you’re scheduled to see your parents? Or when you’re trying to focus in class, but you’re pulled out for a meeting with your social worker? If schools aren’t aware of these challenges, it can lead to conflict, often unfairly directed at the children themselves. These unintentional conflicts arise from system clashes that children shouldn’t have to endure - and there’s so much we can do to prevent them. In this podcast, Karylle and I explore the unique challenges that children in care face in school and discuss how we can all work together to make school a supportive place where every child can learn and thrive. Tune in below—listen or watch now! 👇
