⚠️IMPORTANT UPDATE: the URL to the Fund website has changed to https://lnkd.in/guDxuStM The Greater Houston Disaster Alliance has established the Severe Weather and Derecho Recovery Fund (Fund) to support individuals and families affected by the severe storms, derecho winds, tornadoes, and flooding events that occurred between April 26 and May 17, 2024. On May 18, 2024, President Joe Biden approved a Major Disaster Declaration for these combined events impacting multiple counties, including Harris and Montgomery counties, making federal assistance available to support local recovery efforts. The Fund will complement these efforts by providing funds to local nonprofits to provide emergency financial assistance, home repair, and assistance accessing resources services. The Severe Weather and Derecho Recovery Fund will serve uninsured and underinsured low-to-moderate income families (ALICE population) in the affected counties of Harris, Montgomery, and Waller, focusing on disproportionately impacted zip codes and vulnerable populations. Let's come together to support each other and our community. #Disaster #SevereWeather #Houston #ALICE

DISASTER Suggestion: In my professional experience after having learned this first-hand (my current and former Joplin colleagues will attest) - if you're wondering about the best ways you can help communities recover from a disaster? See below. 📣 Send $$, not stuff. Stuff accumulates in warehouses creating a secondary problem for communities to deal with. They don't need teddy bears or blue jeans. Instead, your money will allow residents to buy those things at their local store, which helps with business recovery. So find a reputable organization to send relief $$ to them, not things. 📢 Volunteer your time. Volunteer time that is tracked can usually help communities offset some of the costs of recovery, especially if FEMA gets involved and communities have to cover a soft match for those grant dollars. (Someone might need to double-check me on whether volunteer hours still count - I'll edit this post if they don't.)
