I love how JSX (which apparently now stands for “joyful, simple, experience,") is responding to American Airlines and Southwest Airlines, who have serious model deficiencies, and their #unions attack on #publiccharters. Perhaps they should fix their houses before attacking anyone else. But that would mean they'd have to start, um, competing on #passengerexperience. Flights are far from joyful for their #passengers. Not to mention the JSX Model may restore air service to come of the 400+ communities dropped from the national #airtransportation grid since 2000. Alex Wilcox is right. This is how such air service is supposed to work. “We agree with the FAA that there ought to be additional rules for carriers of a certain size that fly airplanes of a certain size with a certain amount of flights, and we fall in that category,” Wilcox told The Dallas Morning News in an interview last month. “I can say we believe in it because we’ve already done it.” You can't attack us on #safety because we go above and beyond what is required. It already has a Flight Operations Quality Assurance #FOQA and Aviation Safety Action Program #ASAP programs. It has tougher #training. 'Nuf said. A Closer Look At How Airfields And Airports Are Designated In The United States - It's easy to assume that airfield identifiers correlate with letters in the field's name: "JFK" because it's the initials of the late President after whom the airport is named; "MIA" because those are the first three letters in "Miami"; and "LAS" because that's the first half of "Las Vegas." Yet, it's actually way more complicated than that, involving at least three governing bodies with their own separate naming standards. #airports #designation

Today, at our 68th Air Safety Forum, we honored the crews of Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 and FedEx Express Flight 1432 and recognized their heroic actions that saved the lives of hundreds of passengers. When faced major in-flight challenges, these crews led by example and exemplified determination and courage. The crew of Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 is being awarded the ALPA’s Superior Airmanship Award in recognition of the skill and professionalism demonstrated when their aircraft experienced rapid depressurization caused by the left mid exit door plug blowing out. The captain and First Officer Emily Wiprud relied on their extensive training and experience, responded promptly to the in-flight emergency, and safely returned the damaged aircraft with all passengers and crews alive. Captain Hugo Carvajal and First Officer Robert Bradeen Jr. were awarded the Superior Airmanship Award for their extraordinary execution of a go-around that avoided a collision with another aircraft taking off on the same runway. The crew of FedEx Express Flight 1432 maintained vigilance and responded immediately to an extremely dangerous startle event, relying on their extensive training and experience to avert disaster. “These events make crystal clear how critically important is that we maintain the two-pilot standard that we currently have here in the United States. It’s helped lead to the safest skies in the world,” said Capt. Jason Ambrosi, our president. “Remarkably, some corporate special interests are pushing to change that standard and lower the safety bar by allowing commercial flights to operate with only one pilot. This is a dangerous idea, and ALPA is committed to fighting it at every step of the way. We’ve learned the hard way that putting profit ahead of safety is never a good idea, and that’s why we must all join together to stop this bad idea from ever seeing the light of day.” #SafetyStartsWith2 #Aviation #Flight

Scott - again, conveniently, you do not mention #accessibility although The FAA Reauthorization Act includes several sections on accessibility, including establishing #wheelchair spot seating systems on #aircraft The sad thing is that United (and other #airlines) has not under its own volition improved accessibility but is going to be forced to do so through legislation. United recently ordered a fleet of replacement aircraft and did not ask for accessibility improvements. Following are excerpts from a media release on the Act from non-profit ‘All Wheels Up” which has been lobbying for aircraft accessibility for many years, and has taken on the responsibility for testing safety aspects of wheelchair spot seating system restraints. These outline the aspects on the Act’s accessibility clauses which Scott did not mention: * “ Expansion of the Advanced Materials Center of Excellence. This subsection expands the Center’s responsibilities to conduct “#researchanddevelopment into aircraft structure crash worthiness and passenger safety, as well as address safe and accessible #airtravel of individuals with a disability, including materials required to facilitate safe wheelchair restraint systems on commercial aircraft.” * A “roadmap” on the feasibility of in-cabin wheelchair restraint systems and a study on #economic and financial feasibility of wheelchair spots on airplanes. The Secretary of #Transportation is mandated to produce a “strategic roadmap,” or plan, in exactly one year that shows how a wheelchair restraint system could be safely employed in a commercial airplane cabin. If implementation of a wheelchair restraint system is deemed doable, the Secretary of Transportation is required to oversee a study on the economic and financial feasibility of #aircarriers to implement wheelchair spots on airplanes. The study would consider cost, demand, operations, and other implementation factors. * Training standards for #airline personnel and contractors who assist wheelchair users. The federal government will now mandate that any airline employee or contractor operating in the United States who assists wheelchair users must complete training. Anticipating and identifying threats. Well trained and skilled pilots are able to foresee potential danger using more then stored database and advanced equipment. The combination of Knowledge, Skills and Attitude, along with human intelligence and their senses provides the capacity to project and predict threats that are not in the scope on any advanced computer. Humans and technology onboard are not competitors; they form an equation. The aim for this symbiosis is the future for aviation safety.

Our President Capt. Jason Ambrosi issued the following statement after the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) adopted its final investigative report into the near-collision of FedEx Flight 1432 and Southwest Flight 708 at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport last year at its Board Meeting today: “For months, ALPA has been sounding the alarm on the ongoing efforts by some aircraft manufacturers to remove pilots from the flight deck and replace them with automation. Today’s NTSB meeting highlighted the critical importance of having two highly trained, well-rested pilots on the flight deck. I commend the FedEx Pilots for their extraordinary efforts to avert disaster and thank the NTSB for its thorough investigation. I echo Chair Homendy’s comments about how the FedEx crew, working together and utilizing their extensive experience and all the resources available, saved the lives of the 128 people onboard Southwest Flight 708. “Today’s discussion makes it crystal clear that lowering safety standards by removing pilots from the flight deck is not acceptable. ALPA has a decades-long history of welcoming and helping to implement new technology that maintains or improves aviation safety and security. But using technology to put profits ahead of safety just won’t fly—and nor should it. During the opening day of our Cargo Symposium, FedEx Pilots Capt. Rich Hughey, chair of the ALPA Cargo Committee, led a robust discussion on the threats currently facing cargo pilots today. Joined by pilot leaders from CargoJet, Atlas Air and ATI Pilots, as well as a representative from our legal team, panelists talked about current and upcoming threats to the profession. The very nature of all-cargo operations requires pilots to fly at all hours of the day and night in and out of the same airports and in the same airspace as pilots flying passengers, yet cargo operations don’t necessarily have the same level of services available. #Aviation #AviationSafety #AvSec #AviationNews #ALPACargo
