At our recent 3PL Best Practice Forum, we delivered a session on the expanse of options available for businesses wanting to improve their warehousing operations through an investment in automation. Our recent research into this area shows that the pace of adoption is accelerating (out of our survey respondents, over 28% had already invested over £5m in automation) but, reassuringly, one of the key messages that came out of our Forum session was that it is perfectly possible to automate in stages, starting at a very low level and making gradual changes. This echoes the sentiment of Sharon Hammond (FCILT)'s fabulous presentation at our Supply Chain Debate earlier this year. Sharon talked about automation as a key factor in advancing supply chains in the next ten years but emphasised that projects can be undertaken on a piecemeal basis and don't necessarily have to involve a huge, challenging and disruptive big bang implementation, which is what deters many businesses from investing.
