The first in our series highlighting our team's unique journeys is Sara, our Retail Merchandiser & Inventory Manager. What inspired you to move to London, and how has this city influenced your career and personal growth? I had been telling my parents that I would move to London since I was 13 years old. Back then it was just pure fascination with the idea of London and everything you see on TV… also, all the concerts were in London and that’s all I cared about! As I finished school and needed to figure out what to do with my life, it also started to become a place where I could see a lot of opportunities I didn’t have back home. There's always something happening in London, that was the main reason why I wanted to be here. From a career perspective, I could never have achieved what I have achieved here if I had stayed in Italy. I was given the opportunity to learn and to grow while working, which helped me build my confidence and got me to where I am today.   How does working at Lina Stores align with your dreams and goals when you decided to move to London? Beyond my imagination. I didn’t have a clear dream job or goal when I first started looking. When I joined Lina as an Office Manager that’s as far as I thought I would go, but thanks to the opportunities that I was continuously given, I started to be a little greedier! I guess you can say that the job shaped my goals as time went by and exceeded all the expectations I had back then! What challenges did you face when you first arrived in London, and how did you overcome them? I had barely spent any time outside of Italy when I moved to London. I was 20 years old and suddenly had only myself to rely on so adapting to that was a little tough. I had a good support system here already, which helped me navigate the city and all the things I wasn’t used to doing. I was also relieved when I finally found high-quality pasta at Lina Stores to cook, as food is such an important part of making yourself feel at home. I was very quickly over the pasta from Asda that my host parents were feeding me when I first moved! Can you share a memorable experience or learning moment at Lina Stores that has shaped your career or outlook on life? As annoying as it is to be talking about COVID still, it’s probably 2020 when we all had to go into lockdown. We had very little time to change everything we knew about how we were operating the business until then and find a way to adapt to the new normal. That was kind of a big realisation moment for me, because what I could do for the company really had an impact on the future of the business. What advice would you give to others who are considering moving to a new city for better opportunities, based on your experience? Pushing your boundaries can be scary but it can also open many doors you never would have thought you could walk through.

We caught up with Jodie Fogell, our Inventory Performance & Governance Specialist, to discuss her four years working at RS since she joined the business as an apprentice. Good Morning Jodie, what does a typical day look like for you in your role? JF: "My day really differs depending on whether I am working from home, in the office or on a study day as part of my masters course. But it usually involves a lot of collaboration with colleagues and stakeholders from our team and externally, which I absolutely love. "I am one of Inventory's CI ambassadors and also work on a number of specific projects to help the business. For example right now I’m creating a Citizens Developer strategy for Inventory to understand and communicate how we plan to utilise and leverage the new and the different." What is your favourite thing about working at RS? JF: "For me there are two things; the people and the opportunities. It’s no secret that RS employees are some of the most friendly, helpful and supportive, so I am truly grateful to get to work around so many positive people. "The opportunities are endless in this organisation too though. In my four years I have completed my Bachelors degree through RS, been supported in progressing onto a Masters, helped to form our Bloomers ERG and become involved in the Neighbourhood team. There are so many ways to develop and get out of your comfort zone here. But wider than that, you also get to shape the company and future direction." What has been your favourite memory so far? "It’s quite a recent one, but we had a really positive CI moderation in December. I had worked closely with my colleagues in the Performance and Governance team to get all of the documentation and evidence collated in a visual but informative way. "It took the best of 5 months to put together, but the feedback was incredibly positive. I’ve only been in this role since April, so I was super proud of myself for getting my head around CI from a different perspective to what I was used to and doing Inventory justice in this space. Safe to say I had a celebratory drink that night!" #RSLife #OurPeople #Inventory

For my first job, I was making £5/hour as a part-time grocery store cashier in Edinburgh, Scotland. Barely able to afford rent, and yet it's one of my fondest memories. A lot of us have humble beginnings, and then slowly build our way towards our long term goals. Sometimes not even knowing what your long term goal is okay. Lesson I learned from working retail: ➡️ What works in one store in one mall doesn't work in another mall in another region. I used to jump on a weekly call as a key holder at my second retail job. For an hour, I would listen to store managers from across Canada talking about the people coming into their stores and what they were saying. It was fun (and educational) hearing stories and sharing our own store's success stories. But sometimes I would have to jump on a call in the middle of January and hear success stories and then have to explain that's it's -30 in Winnipeg and they're are maybe...20 people that walked into our store that day. Sometimes district managers would understand and other times they would try to help you optimize (lol). Regardless, this experience gave me a lot of time to think about why people weren't coming to the mall (while listening to classic rock) and in turn helped me be a more empathetic and helpful sales person. TLDR: Retail taught me to think about people—what factors impact their lives that stop them from doing the things they need and/or want to do. #retail #YWG

Happy National Careers Week! 🌟 Reflecting back to when I was just 18, searching for a part-time job to make ends meet, I never imagined I'd still be with the same company 13 years down the line! My journey with Mitchells and Butlers kicked off at a local Ember Inns, where I vividly recall clumsily pouring my first pint of Stella – more foam than beer! Who would've guessed that years later, I'd be the one coaching teams on the art of the perfect pour? 😄🍺 As I settled into the groove after a month or two, I found myself falling in love with the hospitality industry. When my General Manager transitioned to Vintage Inns, I eagerly followed suit, commencing my progression from team member to Assistant Manager while simultaneously taking on the role of district trainer for my area. Then came a pivotal moment when I stumbled upon a job opening for an Openings Team Trainer. I jumped at the opportunity, went through the interview process, and felt incredibly fortunate to land the role! Openings training became my passion – the thrill of guiding different teams week after week, immersing myself in lots of different brands. After a couple of years, I felt primed for the next phase of my journey and secured a secondment in a Training Partner role, spanning across two divisions. This then became permanent and allowed me to delve deeper into content creation and division-specific intricacies. Fast forward to today, and I'm loving my role as a Recruitment Manager! While this role presents fresh challenges from my prior training roles, I relish the daily interactions with lots of different individuals and diving into PBOs. I count myself incredibly lucky to have crossed paths with amazing colleagues and supportive managers along the way. Hospitality truly offers a myriad of career paths, and I'm grateful for the twists and turns of my journey!
