Eye diseases can disproportionately affect African Americans, and it’s essential to be aware of these conditions.
Here are some eye diseases that may have a higher prevalence in African American communities:
1. #cataracts: Cataracts are a common cause of cloudy or hazy vision in older patients. African Americans are more likely to develop cortical cataracts, which affect the outer layer of the lens. Regular eye exams can help detect cataracts early, and cataract surgery is an effective treatment.
2. #glaucoma: Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness among African Americans. They are three times more likely to have glaucoma than Caucasians. Early detection and management are crucial to prevent vision loss.
3. #diabeticretinopathy: Over 825,000 African Americans have diabetic retinopathy, a complication of diabetes that affects the blood vessels in the retina. Regular eye exams are essential for those with diabetes to monitor and manage this condition.
I'd like to thank the National Eye Institute (NEI) for highlighting this information.
Black/African American people are at higher risk of certain eye diseases — and some of these diseases run in families.
