The first phase of Forum for the Future’s Protein Challenge Southeast Asia ran from 2021 to 2024. 🔮 Over three years, we engaged “Protein Visionaries” in the region —food innovators, financiers, civil society and policymakers— to explore how transition pathways from meat-based to plant and alternative protein consumption can be designed to achieve just and regenerative future food systems. 🌱 The goal? To integrate ecological safety and social justice into protein transition interventions. 🌏 In 2023, the programme was nominated for the Food Planet Prize, the world’s largest environmental food award. What happens if we decide that what must come first is… 🏵 Climate and nature: nature-based solutions, large-scale regenerative agriculture, and low-impact bio-tech protein alternatives: ecological stability overrides food culture. 🍅 Healthy, sustainable diets: top-down government-driven action, to avert the costs of poor human and planetary health. 🌎 Community resilience: eating whatever we can get from short, local supply chains and agile food networks - resilient but complex. 🥗 Food security: averting hunger is critical, by increasing yields and efficiencies to ensure access to enough food, even if it’s quantity over quality or nutrition. 🥘 Resource optimisation: squeezing more nutrition from the same footprint, using marketing to build appeal of unfamiliar foods, and wasting nothing. Forum has expanded its Climate & Health Coalition with the launch of the Food Cluster, in collaboration with Britvic plc, SIG Group, and Waitrose & Partners. This initiative will help private sector players in the food and drink industry accelerate action on transforming food and agricultural systems to deliver both climate and health benefits.
