Do you find that most boards rely too heavily on historical data to guide decisions? It’s a common challenge. But what if there’s a better way to drive growth? On November 26, I’m putting on my Deakin Business School hat and teaming up with the Australian Institute of Company Directors to lead a webinar focused on helping boards take a more proactive role in strategy. We’ll dive into the 7 Levers Framework—a tool designed to help boards shift from reactive to proactive, empowering them to make forward-looking decisions that drive sustainable profit growth. In this webinar, we’ll cover: - Why relying on lagging indicators just isn’t enough anymore - How small, strategic adjustments can create a big impact - Practical case studies that show the 7 Levers in action If you’re a board member or involved in strategy development, this session will provide actionable insights you can take straight to your next board meeting. Stories bring issues to life...Hear about CEO Angela and her deep desire for big results. According to Collins/Porras from Built to Last, she had better be prepared to make long-term commitments. 🙋♂️ 🙋♀️ To many this is common sense. But for many CEOs, this is a problem because these results outlast their short-term remuneration schemes. 👨💼 👩💼 Also, some refuse to put any succession in place as it's all about them. Unfortunately, the equation I share at the end of this clip shows that the world of big results, you can't run away from the timeframe required. Or the need for a vision made up of a constellation of BHAGs. Or the requirement to do long-term strategic planning. They all add up to an emerging discipline I explained in the May webinar. Catch the replay here - https://lnkd.in/e9JN-HpC And don't miss the upcoming Long-Term Strategic Planning Conference on June 20-21. See the above page for more details. #strategicplanning #strategicforesight

What a great event! Thank you to everyone involved in bringing this together. I love this topic. Great questions are not just about gathering information—they are a gateway to deeper understanding, meaningful connections, and more productive conversations. However, their true power is unlocked when paired with active listening. When someone asks a question with genuine curiosity, free from ego or a predetermined agenda, it creates a space for open and honest dialogue. This, in turn, fosters trust and mutual respect, forming the foundation of strong relationships. In professional settings, particularly in the boardroom, effective questioning techniques can drive innovation, uncover hidden risks, and challenge assumptions in a way that encourages collaboration rather than defensiveness. Leaders who master the art of questioning demonstrate intellectual humility, a willingness to learn, and the ability to guide discussions toward thoughtful, strategic decisions. Beyond the workplace, great questions play a crucial role in our personal lives. They help us connect on a deeper level with friends, family, and colleagues, showing that we value their perspectives and experiences. Whether resolving conflicts, mentoring others, or simply engaging in meaningful conversations, the ability to ask insightful questions—and truly listen to the answers—can transform interactions and strengthen relationships. By cultivating the habit of asking thoughtful, well-structured questions, we create opportunities for growth, learning, and collaboration in every aspect of our lives.
Last night, Norman Broadbent & Board Intelligence hosted an engaging panel discussion on the ‘The art of questioning: Adding value to boardroom decision-making’. Being an effective NED isn’t about having all the answers—it’s about asking the right questions. But what makes a question great, and how can it shape better decision-making at the highest level? Joined by Mike McTighe (Chair, IG Group, Openreach, Together Money), Megan Pantelides (Executive Director, Board Intelligence), and Shrenik Parekh, CFA Parekh (Director, Financial Services Advisory, BDO UK LLP)—and chaired by Tanya Gass (Partner, Board Practice, Norman Broadbent)—we explored how critical thinking and creativity must go hand in hand to drive meaningful conversations in the boardroom. Some key takeaways: * The best boards don’t just challenge strategy—they shape it through open, well-structured questioning. * Psychological safety is critical: do we have the right environment for people to ask bold, thoughtful questions? * Board meetings shouldn’t feel like an interrogation—NEDs and executives need to engage as equals. * Great decision-making isn’t about consensus; it’s about ensuring diverse viewpoints are heard and respected, even when the final decision goes another way. * Questions should inspire collective thinking, not just individual debate * Listening is just as important as questioning If you had to choose, what’s the most powerful question a board can ask? We’d love to hear your thoughts. #BoardLeadership #NED #CorporateGovernance #CriticalThinking
