Some key highlights were *We need a "fundamental rethink of the relationship of the economy and the natural world"  *We have "rewarded plundering of our natural environment, wrong from a moral point of view and a economic point of view" *"Farmers yields are falling due to soil degradation and the lack of insects. Fishing nets remain empty because fertilizers from the fields suffocate life in the water. Hydro and nuclear plants are going offline because of droughts. Trade along our waterways is being disrupted because our rivers are running dry. There is a clear case for preserving and restoring nature, an economic case" #NatureCredits were mentioned and how to "channel vital resources to those who are providing ecosystem services". Humber Polytechnic has partnered with the Fort William First Nation (FWFN) and researchers from the University of Toronto on the research project “Caring for the Thunderbird’s Nest: Geophysical and Machine Learning solutions to characterize and monitor inequitable Exposures to Ground and Air Pollution.” The project will address a health and environmental crisis in the FWFN community – a cluster of leukemia in very young community members who spent time in childhood in an area with over a century of industrial development. I'm happy to be one of the featured authors in 2024 with this article: "Innovation in a Changing World: Canada’s Strategic Choices" https://lnkd.in/g_2iUxCk In the article, I discussed the critical need for a cohesive national #innovation policy to address challenges like the threat of American tariffs. In October I knew things could get tough for Canada, but I didn’t expect the threat to be this severe, i.e. Trump’s proposed 25% tariff. #Canada must adopt clear and robust policies to stay competitive.
