BMW Group has announced that from March 2025 the all-electric models of its 5 Series Sedan and BMW 5 Series Touring will benefit from a number of technical advances that reduce their energy consumption while increasing their range by up to 47km. This owes much to the first ever use of silicon carbide semiconductor components in the power electronics (SiC converter) of the BMW i5 and to particularly low-rolling-resistance tyres fitted to aerodynamic alloy wheels. The optimised wheel bearings will also help save power.

Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A. is leveraging YASA's axial flux motor technology for the Temrario supercar to deliver an electrified powertrain mated with a V12 internal combustion engine. The Temerario incorporates two YASA axial flux motors, delivering peak torque of 300Nm and peak power of 110kW. Each of the front electric motors weighs 17.3kg, with a diameter of 295mm and thickness of only 70mm. The motors’ maximum speed is 10,000rpm. GM has published patents detailing a novel hydraulic air gap control system for axial flux motors. This tech could allow for smaller, lighter, and more efficient motors by dynamically adjusting torque and speed characteristics on the fly. The potential benefits are huge - increased range, lower costs, and zippy performance, all from a more compact package. Exactly what affordable, mass-market EVs need.
