For an Ecology of Images by Peter Szendy. Translated by Marco Roth. Published by @versobooks Cover design: Claire Mason A new, ecological approach to images by a renowned philosopher. When Susan Sontag first proposed the idea of an “ecology of images,” she meant it as an exhortation to be vigilant against the vast surplus of pictures threatening our ability to truly see. Today, beyond the deep anxieties over a diminishing attention economy, concern focuses on the environmental cost of storing and circulating the digital images that confront us with unprecedented speed. Against the disposable rapidity demanded by digital media, Peter Szendy emphasises the labor and time required for images to develop and come into view. This inquisitive essay takes us from mimicry in the animal kingdom to the history of the shadow, Pliny’s story about the birth of painting to Nabokov’s butterflies, the first use of slo-mo in film to the first aerial photograph. #verso #sontag #susansontag #ecologyofimages #images #attentioneconomy #film #photography #attention #coverdeseign #books @versobooks

FACULTY OF USELESS KNOWLEDGE - #ALLSPECIESMATTER At FUK we consider robust #scientific #evidence that indicates we should do X, but keeps humanity continu doing Y 'useless'. This position of FUK and the Dombrovsky University makes us rather impopular in many scientific circles. There's heavy debate on the concept of 'uselessness' of knowledge compared to the preferred 'not used' knowledge. This is not a triviality or word play. FUK considers knowledge that is willfully ignored 'useless', 'not used' doesn't do justice to humanity's stupidity. An example is found in the #AllSpeciesMatter concept launched by FUK years ago: ecological evidence shows that all #species, no matter what size or cuteness, play a significant role in the #ecosystem. This is a fundamental fact of #life on #earth. Yet humans prefer #photography contests to decide which (photo of a) species is the best of the year. Oh and don't forget #NoNatureNoFuture Pictured are nominees for the #Wildlife Photograph of the year (links in comments)

It's World Snake Day! World Snake Day is an important day when it comes to increasing awareness about the different species of snake all around the world. Of the 3,500 species of a snake around the world, there are only around 600 that are venomous. This is less than 25 percent of snakes! There are only 200 species of snake that pose a considerable risk to human life as well. Enjoy these snakes that invade great moments in art history: https://loom.ly/r0bC2sk

#10 of Search For 10 Art Journey of BarnYard Adventures. The Buildings vellum page that has buildings in it (not landscape, nor animals) is completed! I actually already finished the Landscape vellum page as well because I was trying to balance my foreground with my mid-ground and background, and they work off each other. You'll see how in my next post! Coming up: the Landscape vellum page.

💐🪻Flowers and women's intellectual liberation🪻💐 In my latest Substack article, I explore how, in the 17th and 18th centuries, painting flowers became a gateway for women to study botany and science. I also dive into the fascinating story of Maria Sibylla Merian: a 17th-century artist and naturalist who painted caterpillars, studied plants, and in 1699, sold her paintings to fund a journey to Suriname to study its flora and fauna. Read it here:
