FCE students had the opportunity to visit the national headquarters of the nonprofit organization Guide Dogs for the Blind. They toured the campus and then attended a career panel where they heard about various careers within the organization. Afterward, they toured the University of San Francisco and were hosted by the new student orientation team. At the conclusion of the campus tour, they participated in campus trivia and a student panel about how to navigate the college application process and college life. We would like to thank our hosts at these organizations especially Christine Benninger and Kelly Rippolone. Our students had a wonderful experience!

Economics & Entrepreneurship Scholar | Data & Derivatives Geek | Humanitarian | Strategic Junkie | Outside the box Thinker
When the problems arise, the crisis will let us know who you really are 🌊 Everybody believes when things are going up and the way it makes us happy. But when it goes negative, it confirms who they really are. It's often said that adversity doesn't build character, it reveals it. When things are going smoothly, it's easy to maintain a positive demeanor and get along with others. However, during challenging times, true personalities, resilience, and the capacity to handle stress and uncertainty come to the forefront. This can be true in many aspects of life, whether in personal relationships, professional environments, or even in how people manage their finances during economic downturns. It’s in these moments of crisis that individuals and organizations show their true strength and values.

🥹🥹🥹2024 has been a great year of full circle moments reconnecting with former students! Knowing someone from when they were an undergrad and seeing them FULLY THRIVING in adulthood is an unbelievable blessing to witness. Sara Yelich Miller was an amazing student leader! I absolutely loved when she’d stop by 250 Schleman to chat🫶🏾. Then she became a great colleague, following those of us who had the greatest honor of representing our alma mater🩵🤍 in the undergraduate admissions office. She LOVED Purdue before 🎓🖤💛, but I know that when you spend hours and hours talking about a place you love, it just goes to another level! I’ve followed her career, and she’s done great things, but the role she has with Green Halo Scholar takes all her greatest Strengths and allows her to soar for these amazing young scholars! I’ve been a HUGE fan of the Green Halo Scholars program because they not only give students scholarships for college but also provide the ongoing SUPPORT they need throughout their college journey. This is why Green Halo is a model scholarship and student success program. Sara mentioned in passing that she is also planning their upcoming fundraiser. Please support the work they do! Students need college admissions strategy AND support, so I am #EverGrateful I got to talk about college admissions and combine #Gallup #CliftonStrengths because it is one of the BEST tools for self-awareness that a young person can be introduced to BEFORE they head to college! If you know me, you know I love talking CliftonStrengths, and I definitely love talking about the realities of college because not preparing students for the ENTIRE college journey is a setup for failure. 10 years ago was when my role shifted from working with students leaders to working with students struggling. I have worked with countless students who earned a college scholarship and sadly lost it 🥺 High test scores, high rankings, high levels of involvement, yet thousands of dollars lost. Their hopes and dreams dashed by disappointment. You have no idea how crushing that is for a student and family. It absolutely does NOT have to come to this. So please support this great organization so they can continue helping scholars make thoughtful decisions about college, provide mentorship, and offer successful coaching so they GRADUATE IN FOUR YEARS! We have such a heavy emphasis on getting into college, which is so shortsighted regarding everyone’s goals. This Class of 2029 is, like all their classes, DYNAMIC! Just watch out for the great things they will do now that they are empowered knowing their Strengths! 🧠🦾❤️ I’ve worked with students across all demographics, and I’ve seen even high-income students’ dreams turn into nightmares. But as they say on their website, “You can be a DREAM-MAKER by helping first-generation and low-income high school students gain access to an affordable college education,” SUPPORT GREEN HALO & BECOME A DONOR (link in the comments)
💪 Our scholars know their strengths! Yesterday, our Class of 2029 participated in a Strengths for Students workshop, facilitated by Carol Ben-Davies of College Bound Determination. Every scholar received a personalized report and learned how they can use their strengths in their college search, career exploration, and beyond. It was a fun afternoon learning about how our strengths can make us better students, teammates, and friends! Thanks to grants from the IECA Foundation and Prairie Trail Wise Men's Club for helping this workshop come to life and to our friends The Community House for generously sharing their space!

Director, Career Education ♦️ Program Innovator and Optimizer ♦️ Creative Strategist ♦️ Building bridges between education and industry for student onramps to lifelong success.
California's VISION 2030 aims for all students in California to have the opportunity to graduate from high school with at least 12 college credits in a seamless, automated way. Are there particular dual enrollment courses that can help improve college enrollment and persistence among underserved students? YES! In my data-informed opinion, start with a 9th grade College and Career Counseling course; include a semester each of college English and Math; and culminate with a dual credit capstone CTE course in a Career pathway. That is the recipe for success.

Director, Editorial and Education Policy, at Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce
College and career counseling is particularly important for low-income students because they usually attend schools with the fewest resources and they tend to come from families and backgrounds in which few people have gone to college and can act as mentors. An additional resource: please click through this post for the @GeorgetownCEW report about which colleges give the highest ROI to low-income students.
“Choosing a college is full of anxiety and sometimes results in bad decisions. We need a comprehensive career counseling system to help potential students determine whether a college program is worth the investment,” said Martin Vanderwerf, CEW director of editorial and education policy. As the #schoolleader for #lehmanhighschool Young Adult Borough Center (YABC), we are steadfast in our commitment to redefine success narratives for our students. This Career Week, we doubled down on our mission to arm our students not only with academic knowledge but also with the practical skills necessary for thriving in a professional environment. #CareerWeek at Lehman YABC is more than just a series of events; it’s a crucial part of our strategy to equip students with the tools they need for life after #HighSchool . We believe that true education extends beyond traditional learning. It’s about preparing our students for #realworld challenges and opportunities. This week, our students engaged in hands-on activities that included building their resumes, understanding the nuances of professional attire, and participating in mock interviews. These activities are essential. A well-crafted #resume opens doors. Knowledge of professional attire adds a layer of confidence. Effective interview skills can be the difference between obtaining a job or missing an opportunity. We ensure our students learn these skills, practice them, and understand their value. We are also changing the daily habits of our students. By incorporating dress codes that encourage style and professionalism, we help our young men and women not only look but also feel the part of budding professionals. Our young men are required to wear a shirt and tie, and our young #Queens , collared shirts. This isn’t about enforcing a uniform; it’s about instilling a sense of style, professionalism, and self-respect. We have to change the narrative and encourage our students to continue to break barriers and build futures. #StudentSuccess #Empowerment #LehmanYABC #FutureLeaders #AllWeDoIsWin for our #scholars At #lehmanYABC We remain #vigilant about #Empowering Our #Students #smallhornestyle #smallhornemindset #shoutout to Edwin Berroa MPS, M.Ed for returning to #empower our #YoungKings “Your zip code does not determine your destiny”- Martin GE Smallhorne

I just have 1️⃣ thing to say to the #HigherEd Institutions that are leaning in on INDUSTRY-LED CAREER EXPLORATION for the #MilAffiliatedStudents they serve: THANK YOU! 🙏🏽 We've worked hard to offer at-scale engagement that is EASY, CASUAL, VIRTUAL (& free for schools). Collaborative sharing by our Ed partners has been key to encouraging student attendance. For the April 11 50strong EmployerConnect: ⏩ 55% of the ~700 registered identified themselves as **currently-enrolled students or recent grads**. And here are the Top 10 Schools that drove this. We thank their leaders for their commitment to collaboration & strong employment outcomes. Note: this is based on affiliations as stated by each registered guest as a % of total mil-affiliated students (so fair for smaller schools). #VeteranEmployment includes #StudentVeterans. Are you affiliated with one of these schools?!?
