Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression’s Post

The right to petition is about more than gathering signatures. The First Amendment guarantees the right to express your opinions about the government — even if those opinions are only negative — without fear of retaliation. Democracy cannot exist without this fundamental right. #firstamendment #righttopetition #freespeech #civilrights #democracy

We Americans think nothing of “writing my congressman!” But in many other countries in this world, a common man such as myself wouldn’t dare do something so impudent. And this sets a whole tone for government. It was George Washington to decreed that the proper address for the President of the United States is not, “Your Highness,” or “Your Magnificent,” or “Your Excellency,” but Mr. President. And that relationship between the people and the government follows. We can be thankful as we finish our extended Independence Day celebrations for so many other rights in our Constitution, rights we take for granted but which most people on this earth do not have.
