I just attended this presentation through Oregon Health & Science University, shedding light on the clinical disparities in treating women's pain. It's startling to learn how women's pain is often disregarded, misdiagnosed, and undertreated, especially in routine procedures like pelvic exams and IUD placements. Grateful for insights into advancements in pain management and trauma-informed care, crucial for enhancing the healthcare experience for women. #WomensHealth #PainManagement #HealthcareDisparities https://lnkd.in/gXRWzp77

In recognition of #BlackMaternalHealthWeek, we're excited to highlight Main Line Health's initiative, “Reducing Primary Cesarean Section Rates and Narrowing the Equity Gap," which placed in the Top 10 of the 2023 Excellence in Health Care Awards. Given that women are more likely to experience life threatening complications with a cesarean delivery versus a vaginal birth, Main Line's team sought out to decrease the primary c-section rate across their system, improve labor & delivery data, and identify racial disparities among outcomes. Interventions included development of patient education material placed in obstetricians offices; aligning the Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluation (OPPE) for physicians and the Safe, Timely, Efficient, Effective, Equitable, Patient Centered (STEEEP) measures with quality goals; analyzing equity data; improving physician access to data, and more. Results included a reduction in the overall primary c-section rate, and the disparity gap between Black and White patients narrowed from 7.2% to 0%. Another great study I had the opportunity to cover! The authors highlight the importance of health systems implementing social interventions, and acknowledged that #antiracist approaches are required to do so successfully. Racism at all levels can prevent access to social needs programs. This framework is super helpful and provides actionable steps that can be used at each stage of implementation. Check out my piece to learn more! ⤵
To effectively address patient social needs, health systems must use approaches rooted in anti-racism. LDI Fellows Aditi Vasan and George Dalembert of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia provide a framework to guide health systems in shaping programs and policies. What do we know about care outcomes in long-term care? A new systematic review analyzing care outcomes in long-term care, found 62% of included studies demonstrated disparities in care outcomes for minoritized groups compared to majority groups in #longtermcare, as published in Age and Ageing, the official journal of the British Geriatrics Society. Systemic disparities in long-term care outcomes for minoritized populations highlight the need for comprehensive research to inform equitable policies and practices. A great piece today highlighting the disproportionate risks faced by Latino patients. A study found Latino patients are more likely to be overmedicated and deeply sedated unnecessarily. Language barriers between Latino patients and providers are thought to be a cause of this overmedication, as patients are unable to communicate effectively. Two of NHMA's goals: increasing physician education of Hispanic Health, and increasing Latino representation among physicians and healthcare providers present two solutions which impacts could go a long way to remediating the disparate risks faced by Latino patients. Great work from the Latin Times! What are some potential solutions to this problem? What are other causes? bit.ly/42YUCm4
