I come from a long line of foragers, as we all do, when we go back far enough. When I was three, we relocated to New Haven, Connecticut, from Kyushu, Japan. Just across the street from our apartment complex, a deserted field teemed with edible greens like shiro-za (lamb’s quarters), yomoji (mugwort), and asatsuki (chives). There, under my mother’s gentle guidance, I learned to carefully unearth the deep taproot of gobo (burdock) without breaking it. She also taught me to listen for the hollow pop that the spring shoots of itadori (Japanese knotweed) emit when snapped in two—a sure sign they were ready to be eaten. A decade ago, my mother had a stroke. That spring, partially paralyzed, she came to live with me on my farm, where I gathered and prepared wild plants for her daily, just like she used to do for me. MISO WILD Pronunciation: Me So Wild. This isn’t exactly my mother’s miso but she adores my version which she fondly refers to as ‘oishi kusuri,’ meaning ‘delicious medicine.’ Miso Wild, is my uncooked miso made of weeds and their hugely diverse array of nutrients and beneficial microbes. SMOOTHIE Pronunciation: Smoo Bee. When my mom had a stroke a decade ago, she came to live with me. Smoothies made from wild plants I foraged each day were an important part of my dietary approach to helping her heal and since has become a cornerstone of my family’s daily health maintenance routine. Today, Mom and I continue to forage together. ‘Let’s climb to the top of the mountain,’ she says, pointing to East Rock. Here´s a little recap from last weeks workshop with regard to safety. All employees had the chance to go through some stations to learn more about safety and it's risks. At one checkpoint, new excercises were learned how to avoid daily stress and how to be more focused in the workspace. An exciting game required a lot of concentration and provided more insights into the important life-saving-rules. This is a further step towards increasing focus on saftey during daily work and prevent any risky situations, especially in the production.
