'With the recent cold snap, many of us have been reaching for the thermostat - but the reality is that far too many buildings in this country remain shockingly energy-inefficient. This makes heating more expensive, both in terms of cost and carbon emissions. At Green Building Design, we’ve been tackling this issue head-on throughout 2024, helping to create buildings that are not only warmer but also more sustainable. And as we move further into 2025, our commitment to driving positive change in energy efficiency and sustainability remains stronger than ever. 🌐 www.gbuild.co.uk #SustainableDesign #GreenBuilding #HeatPump #EnergyEfficiency #netzero

Building for a greener tomorrow. As World Green Building Week draws to a close, it’s imperative to reflect on the industry’s progress and the challenges that lie ahead. The shift towards sustainable construction is driven by a growing awareness of the urgent need to address climate change and reduce our environmental impact. However, sustainable construction is more than just building green infrastructure. It’s about designing, constructing, and operating buildings in a way that minimises their environmental impact throughout their entire lifecycle... We are so proud of designing the Marpole Community Centre project to reduce #embodiedcarbon by 40%, meeting the City of Vancouver's 2030 embodied carbon targets today. Read the #casestudy that we wrote on how we did it! Thanks to the City of Vancouver and the design team Diamond Schmitt, Fast + Epp, and RDH Building Science, Introba, and to the construction management of Heatherbrae Builders. This case study is a part of a larger work we completed with the City of Vancouver to provided feedback and inform and shape Embodied Carbon Guidelines. We consulted on questions that arose during the process, like: • What is a reasonable Baseline? • How can teams innovatively work together to generate a bill of materials for a project that would have been constructed in 2018? • What whole building life cycle assessment tools have limitations related to the Guide requirements? • Where does fire code limit design options for functional equivalence? • How can teams take credit for reducing the amount of parking? • Is it possible to achieve the ambitious carbon reduction goals set in the City's Climate Action Plan? At reLoad we take pride in advancing the industry through collaborative initiatives such as this project and sharing the results widely. Thanks to our friends at CLF British Columbia | Carbon Leadership Forum for the platform.
Check out this fantastic case study by reLoad Sustainable Design Inc on The Marpole Community Centre, which served as a pilot project to test the City of Vancouver Embodied Carbon Guidelines. The project was used to provide feedback to the City regarding methods for achieving reductions in embodied carbon and the corresponding methodologies for substantiating them. By clearly outlining their process and identifying the five lessons learned, with excellent data visuals, this case study demonstrates that the City of Vancouver's target of achieving a 40% reduction of embodied carbon in new buildings by 2030 can be achieved today!
