(Part 1 of 2) The past 8 recruiters who contacted me (unsolicited) all asked if I was interested in contract compbio roles. It got me thinking about the pros and cons of these jobs. I’d like to use a series of posts to think through this phenomenon. What is the case for hiring biotech/pharma computational biologists as contractors instead of as full-time employees? Argument: It's cheaper to hire computational biologists as contractors. Rebuttal: Employers who insist on contract roles experience higher turnover and more frequent disruptions to scientific projects. Is that loss of productivity, morale, and resident knowledge really cheaper, even in the short term (1-2 years)? If a good computational biologist contractor builds something valuable for you and then leaves, lots of know-how will be lost in the handover. And given that you are not loyal to them, how hard do you think they will try to train the next person to take over? From my experience, even when a full-time computational biologist spends a full month of good-faith effort to document and hand over their work, most projects they worked on still die when they leave. I imagine that loss is even more dramatic when a contractor leaves. I promise good science, good colleagues, good chance for soft skill enrichment, the most interdisciplinary academic chem research team anywhere (I'm open to challengers!), and a reasonable boss (once he's had his coffee). Feel free to share with anyone who is looking. We hire the person, not the CV. Good people are welcome. Bigots can go jump off a short pier. NOTE: I am getting a ton of approaches and messages over LinkedIn for this. I understand why, but don't do that. There are clear instructions in the ad. If you can't follow clear instructions, then I think we might not have a good working relationship. The application process is designed to be equitable--if you want to apply, use it. There is a lot of detail as to what we are looking for, if you don't meet the minimum skillset criteria, others do. I will be VERY surprised if we find anyone who has ALL the preferred experience (so don't select out on that). Your cover letter is your chance to discuss WHY you meet the criteria, both minimal and preferred, and what else you can do too. That's what a cover letter is for. I read them first. Consequently, I will not be considering applications that do not follow the process. Questions are fine, but I think most of what I can talk about at this point is in the ad, and I haven't received any questions in all the contacts on this position yet.

It's not that difficult to find a qualified potential candidate at any level or for any position you want, with just a few hours of searching here or there, even without a recruiting services agency. The difficulty lies in finding someone who carries the values, ethics, and integrity that align with the company’s code, while also having chemistry with the team, the environment, the company’s vision, mission, and values, as well as with both top management and lower positions. That chemistry matters, like an orchestra working together in perfect harmony, without any anomalies. A lot of people have great certificates and diplomas, along with long experience, but not that many will add true value to the position they are hired for, to the team they will work with, to maximize real stakeholder value, to the development of processes and procedures, to enhance the work environment, or to be comfortable working closely with.
