#food is #farming is #food - this is an excellent illustration of the farmers' voice. No matter your place in the agrifood supply chain, it is prudent to first understand the realities of farming before developing ways to change it. That understanding leads to opportunities for collaboration, and collaboration is the key to unlocking mutually beneficial change.

Diversifying rotations in the corn belt. New paper from Traldi et al. in a Purdue collaborative research project. I am always interested in owned vs rented and its there in Table 2 and: "Regarding land access, several farmers mentioned that their decision-making was severely constrained by high land costs since they had to keep profits and productivity up and could not afford the risk of experimentation with diversified practices, particularly on rented acres. Additionally, some participants mentioned that the land market put them in the position of deciding whether to expand their business while potentially causing conflict with neighbors." The biggest challenges to diversification are economic and market access. Lots of examination of this in this paper and suggested ways to address these challenges in the conclusion. Thanks Purdue researchers and the entire research collaboration for sharing this research.

I presented my research at the at University of the Fraser Valley's Faculty Micro-Lecture event today.  My presentation was on the Effects of Message Framing on Plant-based Meat Alternatives (PBMAs). The world’s population is over eight billion people, and as this continues to grow, the world food demand is expected to double by 2050. Meeting the growing food demand through animal meat is not environmentally sustainable. Excessive meat and livestock production drives climate change, biodiversity loss, and land-use change. So, what can we do about it? Switch to the PBMAs! While this is a viable option but the reception to animal meat alternatives has been lukewarm. The research question here is can message framing influence a consumer’s negative attitude toward PBMAs and encourage them try it? Our review suggests that positive-framed messages tend to be more persuasive than negative-framed messages, and the description of health benefits from eating PBMAs are more appealing than the description of environmental issues. Thus, making consumers feel guilty has little persuasive effect. Consumers want to feel good about the food decisions affecting their health.
