When I took over Saanté, a brand with deep roots in Ayurvedic tradition, I knew we had to stay flexible and ready to adapt. But it’s not just about following trends—it’s about staying true to our values while evolving with the times. Here’s what’s helped us navigate the changes: 1) Customer-Driven Innovation: Some of our best ideas come straight from our community. Listening to customers has helped us refine our products to meet real needs. It’s not about jumping on trends—it’s about solving problems people actually face. 2) Embracing Tech: I wasn’t always tech-savvy, but technology has been crucial for us. From understanding customer preferences to optimizing our processes, it’s helped us stay agile and ahead of the curve. 3) Sustainability at the Core: Sustainability isn’t just a trend—it’s part of our legacy. We’ve built it into our sourcing, packaging, and day-to-day operations. Consumers now expect brands to lead with this, and we’re proud to be at the forefront. Taking forward a generational business means finding that balance between honoring tradition and embracing change. While reading Sandra Halliday's Fashion Network article, "David Beckham invests in wellness firm Prenetics, will launch IM8 brand", I thought about David Beckham's Prenetics Play: A Golden Opportunity or Theranos 2.0? David Beckham's recent investment in Prenetics, a genetic profiling company launching a new co-founded brand called IM8, is making headlines. But, as the strategic detective, I see red flags. Ones that raise serious questions. And as a consequence, this venture. Here's what triggers my "Spidey Sense". I hope I'm wrong: 🧐 SPAC Attack: Prenetics went public via an SPAC, which is notoriously known for its lack of transparency compared to traditional IPOs. This should make any investor wary. 🚩 Financial Red Flags: Despite a $1.3 billion valuation at the merger (May 2022), Prenetics' market cap has plummeted to $82 million (July 2024). They're haemorrhaging cash with no profits and a massive burn rate. 💰Excessive Compensation: A $15 million payout to executives in FY2023 a year with a $51.9 million operating loss and only $21.7 million in revenue? That's a red card the size of Old Trafford (sorry, I couldn't help it.) 👻 The Ghost of Theranos: The parallels to the infamous Theranos scandal are hard to ignore and chilling. Both companies promised revolutionary health tech, attracted celebrity endorsements, went public via SPACs, and now face financial liquidity challenges. Should #Beckham Be Worried? While it's not guaranteed that Prenetics or IM8 will fail, the warning signs are strong. This investment could severely tarnish Beckham's reputation and impact his financial standing. David Beckham is the single stakeholder with the most to lose. In my humble opinion. 🕵🏻♂️ A Strategic Detective's Advice: It's too early to call this a disaster or catastrophe, but investors should always tread carefully. VC funds and startups have high failure rates. Research shows that 9 out of 10 startups fail due to cash flow issues and lack of market need. It's too easy to just say, "Thoroughly scrutinise Prenetics' financials, technology, and leadership before taking the plunge." For David Beckham, this could be a costly lesson in due diligence. Sometimes, the shiniest opportunities (rabbit inc. R1 and Humane Inc AI Pin) aren't always the most solid. There has been a recent uptick in demand for direct-to-consumer (D2C) brands in the health and wellness space, report Jessica Rajan and Ajay Rag for The Economic Times. HealthifyMe, a Unilever-backed health and wellness startup, recorded sales of ₹2.5 crore on the first day of 2024 — over 3X more than its average daily revenue of ₹70 lakh, the report says. Fitness brand Boldfit saw a 20%-25% jump in sales during the first week of January, the report says, quoting the company’s founder Pallav Bihani. Apparel brand Blissclub also saw a revenue growth of 50%-60% in December and January, compared to previous months, says Founder and CEO Minu Margeret. Apart from a seasonality spike due to the New Year, the trend indicates that more consumers are prioritising their fitness and wellbeing, the report says. Ankur Khaitan, Principal at Fireside Ventures, believes that the sector has great potential. The fund is planning to increase investments in the health and wellness sector, he adds. A few months ago I got the opportunity to meet Natalie E., the entrepreneur behind skincare brand fjör. Over coffee early one crisp London morning, Natalie told me about her fascinating journey to starting fjör. In the increasingly crowded beauty landscape, fjör has stood out as an emerging disruptor. Cue founder Natalie Enslöw, who a few years ago quit her corporate job to start her own company on the basis of three core pillars, before even having conceptualized her brand or product. Of fjör she says, “I knew that no matter what the product would be, it had to be something that was simple, powerful and accessible.” Those attributes have carried through, partnering with a biotech to harness the power of hydrolytic enzyme technology in the form of a serum, and creating an expanding minimalist skincare brand designed to boost the skin’s microbiome. She learned early on that skincare had a huge impact on well being while growing up in places with contrasting environments like Singapore, Scandinavia and London.
