Earlier this year, we partnered with Michael Etter at King's College London, to offer students on the Strategic Entrepreneurship and Innovation Masters Programme, an internship at Founders Keepers. This week we are delighted to see this initiative come to life – as we bring two brilliant students to our team Joycelyn Alleyne and Arissa Lotz. Welcome to you both – we are delighted to have you with us, and a big thank you to Michael and KCL for enabling us to drive this initiative with the Masters programme students.

One of the most rewarding parts of my first year at University of Virginia Darden School of Business has been establishing and building up the ETA (Entrepreneurship through Acquisition) community here. We launched a new club, the Darden ETA club, and hosted a number of well-attended events including some lunch and learns with alumni. The club’s mission is to educate students on the opportunities for acquiring, owning, and operating small to mid-sized businesses, and to equip them with the network and resources needed for success. With that in mind we e have some exciting things on the horizon for this upcoming year: - Co-hosting the Southeast ETA conference in September - Hosting more lunch & learns - Building out a robust network of alumni who are interested in mentoring and investing with students who want to acquire and operate a business. - Creating a strong pipeline of high quality ETA-related summer internships and independent studies for students - Establishing an “acquisition incubator” for second year students If you are a current, prospective, or former student, or if you simply want to get involved, let me know and we’ll get you connected! I want to give a shoutout to Daniel MacLean Vernic MJ Dougherty Toms Michele Rankin Les Alexander and others who have invested lots of time to grow the ETA space at Darden. I’m excited to see the ETA community grow here during the next year! 🚀 #ETA #Entrepreneurship #MBA

Looking ahead to Junior Achievement of Northern California's Entrepreneurship Summit next week, I better give some thought to what my opening remarks will be to an auditorium full of ambitious high school students. Here goes: How often have you been told that “life’s not fair!” I would estimate that 90% of us have heard that cliché from our parents, mostly as a way to cope with life’s disappointments. But is that saying really true?? Is life demonstrably unfair for 90% of us… or from another angle, do situations feel unfair 90% of the time? In the end, I think we all wish to believe that life is fair… and that is why we so often rely on Karma as our universal settler of scores. Did that litterbug finally get fined? Did that lazy coworker finally get demoted? Did that bully who picked-on people all through high school finally get a taste of the same medicine? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Well that, my fellow entrepreneurs, is how our fintech startup got its name. As the name suggests, we live at the intersection of KARMa and EQuity, endeavoring to restore a sense of economic “fairness” in America. Technically, KARMEQ is a broker/dealer investing platform that uniquely enables stocks as gifts – on a mission to close the Wealth Gap and inspire financial independence for future generations. What would be the name your startup? And why? #Entrepreneurs #Startups #Branding #FinTech #KARMEQ.com

Usually, the weakest part of a pitch deck is the competition slide. Most founders pitching struggle to communicate how their startup differs from the competition. As someone who’s internship is focused on understanding the competition and developing strategic recommendations - I get it. Explaining your startup’s differentiation against competitors to investors is *hard*. There’s generally not a lot of information out there, and if there is, it’s in bits and pieces. I’ve been spending a lot of time doing this work myself. There are three areas, or buckets, that I organize information I collect to triangulate my understanding of the competition. I’ll share more on this tomorrow.
