Talking to founders on a daily basis, I'm often asked where I see the (venture) money going and with what terms. Anecdotally here I've finally been hearing/seeing Singapore and SEA startups close priced rounds without having to drop valuations – it seems the funding winter is starting to thaw. It looks like this is corroborated by the data – a recent report by Carta Data Minute by Peter Walker finds that: 📈 Primary seed rounds are at a median of $3.4M, hovering close to 2022 all-time high of $3.5M 📈 Series A rounds at $9.9M are also close to the all-time high 📈 Later stages are still lagging behind, *BUT* they have significantly rebounded since the lows of 2023 🎊 Valuations are trending UPWARD! It does seem like we're finally moving toward a "recovery" in the market after a very stagnant past few quarters. We'll be releasing full Q2 numbers shortly on our Carta Data Minute. If your mental model around data building at your organization is transactional and bespoke, it might be time to consider those data assets as software. This has several benefits - one of the most important is observing the stability of your data. Is it fresh (does it need to be)? Is is accurate (do you have tests around it)? Is it valuable (how many downstream reports are connected to it). If you're conducting multiple siloed analyses, might be worth approaching your analyses and reporting differently. The data room conundrum, the hardest and fastest down selection. From 63 to 39 to 9. Thirty nine third meetings sounded promising, but only 9 made it to the final round. Here’s what I learned. As I mentioned in my last post, I didn't work hard enough to get to an early "no." These data demonstrates the impact of that broad strategy. While long term it paid off, short term it meant additional months of effort. Out of 63 that requested more information after a second meeting: 👍🏻 63 said yes for more information 👎 of that, 52 said no after seeing the data room 👍🏻 9 said yes after seeing the data room Of the 52 who said no, there was a wide variety of ‘no thank you’ that took some time to manage that process. My views: I was surprised by the number of VCs who accessed the data room for < 1 minute and then said no and then said they do not invest in pre or low revenue (even though that had been said during the meetings) For those that spent 1 - 5 minutes, it was to review the deck that had already been sent, and then gave a template no. For the ‘good nos’ - it was those VCs reviewed the projections and team slides / strategy then gave feedback and said no. Reflecting on this, I should have been more diligent about what the VC firm was looking for and pre-qualifying their decision making criteria early. Also raising that difficult question of ‘do you have any reservations’ and working through that while on the call. This would have saved me months of work. The importance of prequalification and vetting VCs before moving forward can't be overstated - the impact was a diffuse data room. Here are a few key takeaways: Prequalification is Crucial: Understanding your VCs' interests and aligning them with your vision saves time and effort. Data Room Organisation: Keeping your data room well-organised and focused can streamline the decision-making process. Early "No" Saves Time: Don't shy away from pushing for an early decision. It can save valuable time and resources in the long run. Hope of a Yes Can Be Costly: Delaying a "no" in the hope of a "yes" can chew up valuable runway.
