"Committees are an infrastructure designed to race you to the bottom of opportunity!" - Futurist Jim Carroll Committees kill ideas. Committees kill all initiative. Committees kill the idea of innovation. Committees are the destroyer of all things. Did I mention I think committees are a bad idea? "Let me check with the committee." "We've got a committee looking into that." "There's a committee involved with the decision." "We'll send that to the committee for deliberation." And the worst one: "We think we should study it a bit more, and so we'll form a committee!" These are the phrases that send organizations into a death spiral of inaction driven by the lowest common denominator of thinking. They are the black holes of the corporate universe - it’s where innovation goes to die, creativity is destroyed, bright sparks of imaginative thinking are snuffed out - and a place from which no great idea or bold initiative can ever escape! Shout out to the next wave of Cross-Sector Leaders! Last Friday, I returned to the Next Generation Service Corp. @ ASU to participate as an Alumni Panelist for a Q & A workshop. The questions asked revolved around the challenges that come with working in the nonprofit, public, and private sector. What does it look like to create a "buy-in" for your stakeholders, active players on your team, and even yourself? Addressing a sense of "burnout", amongst other items. Sitting there in front of those undergrads, I saw a reflection of a younger me. And all I could think about is what I would tell him. Finding your dream job or career can be a strenuous adventure. But to double down and embody public service simultaneously, a goal like that can sometimes feel out of reach. There are many of us out in the workforce who are still trying to create meaning and purpose for ourselves. Some find it later in life. With the guidance of NGSC, I came to understand that having a strong sense of core values will help you trailblaze that path to your calling. I don't think of it as destiny, it's more of architecture... Moore's Law anticipates the rapid evolution of technology. In application, I'm optimistic about the rapid evolution of NGSC and the students who participate in the program: The Next Servant Leaders of Tomorrow. It's a privilege knowing my hindsight gets to be part of their foresight.
