“An engineer's innovative mind is a country's dream" ~ Eng. Henry Mpuuga Today I was delighted to be part of the first episode of the weekly ENGINEER UP EVENT. This initiative is a program by Kyambogo University Innovations Clinic (KIC) which is under Kyambogo University Engineering Society (KYUES). The KIC was formed this year with advice from Eng. Henry Mpuuga who is the Research, Innovation and Grants committee member at Uganda Institution of Professional Engineers- UIPE (Official). KIC’s vision is “Aspire to be heartbeat of innovation at Kyambogo University and nation at large by bringing in innovative students by being innovators they will be.” Today's episode 01 of the Engineer Up Event was held on a webinar with the theme “Breaking the mind into innovation space" with Eng. Henry Mpuuga being the guest speaker with over 90 people in attendance. We need to stop being engineers that identify and fix problems. We need to learn to design new solutions. For example imagine you're a mechanical engineer working in a factory and a pump heats up. From your teaching at university, you will check the seals and probably change them by purchasing them somewhere or even purchase a new pump. But ideally as an engineer you should be able to design a new pump or seals that will fit in your specifications and hence your device won't break down. The reason why you're not innovative enough to design a new pump or seal is probably because of the education system you passed through - the kind that is tuned at developing obedient workers such that they can celebrate labor day. Let's think outside the box! Special thanks to Eng. Julius Ceaser Kintu, a Professional Development Manager at Uganda Institution of Professional Engineers- UIPE (Official) for also attending the webinar his knowledge he briefly shared with us was impactful and insightful. One notable communication he passed on to us was about how an engineer should present themselves with value. He left us with a question that he usually asks graduate engineers he interviews, “Why were you not retained where you did your internship from?”💭🤔 Ask yourself this question too. Let’s hear more from Thomas!    Were you seafood fan before joining HLF? What’s your favourite product?  Yes! I always try to eat healthy, so I’ll have some type of seafood at least 1-2 times a week. High Liner’s Crispy Breaded Shrimp and Pan-Sear Salmon are my favorites. What’s been the best part of your placement with HLF so far?  It’s hard to pick! I’ve had the chance to learn a lot of great things so far this summer. This includes learning about ammonia refrigeration, how it works, and its key role in food manufacturing. I’ve also had the opportunity to learn about the role of engineering behind many of the food processing stages, to shadow staff on the floor, and to work on several different AutoCAD projects, learning new functions and commands within the computer-aided design software. It's safe to say that I'll complete my placement with lots of valuable knowledge.  Have you worked on any special projects during your placement? If so, can you tell us more about them?  A special project I’ve worked on is updating and adjusting the master AutoCAD drawing plan for our Newport News facility. I modified, cleaned up, and implemented the HLF layer standards into that master drawing, ensuring each piece of equipment was correctly labeled. As a result, the Engineering team now has a high-quality, accurate AutoCAD drawing of the Newport News facility that they can refer to well into the future. How has your placement impacted your perception of HLF and/or the seafood industry?  I’m proud to work for a company that strives to prioritize sustainability, protect marine life, and uphold their responsibility to nourish communities. As an engineer it’s important to bring cost-effective and reliable technical solutions to deliver high quality products to consumers. Ensuring environmentally friendly practices while doing so is vital and something HLF does very well.  What advice would you give to other students considering an internship at HLF?  Make the most of your time with your coworkers and supervisors. I’ve been able to learn so much from people with decades of industry experience. It’s a privilege to work with so many brilliant people and learn practical things from them that I couldn’t learn in school. Make the most of it and don’t hesitate to ask about anything you’d like to know more about. Good Morning!! I’m working off of little sleep but got to college early. Don’t worry, I’ve grabbed a Gingerbread latte at the cafe. I’m ready to get this assignment out of the way to be honest. Next month I’ll be in Building Construction and Building Materials Science. I’m not sure what to think yet. 😩 Most people go into construction because they hate #science and #math. In fact, most of my classmates were upset that they have to take these classes as they are #quantitysurveying apprentices, #cad apprentices, etc. #STEM My manager says he’ll see what I’ll learn about metal properties such as nickel. I heard a bit of maths is still required in the course, so we shall see. Day – 7 In Day 7 of the QUADE KNOWLEDGE UPSCALE PROGRAM for our engineering students, our CEO, Santhosh A, explained the importance of study and review, highlighting how crucial it is in completing Millwork projects effectively. In the "Purpose of Study" topic, he shared the benefits and advantages of starting a project properly by studying thoroughly. --Proper study helps us identify and fix issues in the early stages of the project, making the process rework- and error-proof, and avoiding interruptions in the creation process due to issues or missing information. --A combination of proper study, review, asking questions, and communication is a must-have and the bare minimum for success. Santhosh A then showed a live project input and demonstrated how to review the input email and check the given inputs. He shared the input files with the interns and reviewed these live projects with them. At the end of the session, since it was their first time reviewing a Millwork project, Santhosh A gave them a task to find our scope of products based on the work order. All the interns completed this task with full interest. The real world doesn’t need to be a memory test. I have often found myself drafting or reviewing electrical technical documentation with half my time wasted trying to remember the symbols and their meanings. The illusion that knowledge learnt at university or during an apprenticeship will remain with you, until the exact moment you need it, is probably one of the biggest lies we tell ourselves in this industry. So, I have attached an IET download 'cheat sheet'. Hopefully enough to help you shake off the grey matter and speed up your technical productions and reviews 😊
