Today I stumbled over an article regarding dietary protein content and supplementation of tryptophan on dominance aggression and hyperactivity in dogs. The study is from 2000, but I think it is relevant for today also. Why do I think it relevant for dog food of today? I do this because, the composition of dog food is changing from a high protein animal-based food to lower protein and more plant-based food. Not only are plant-based protein sources low in tryptophane (Trp), but they are also higher in the large neutral amino acids (LNAA), threonine, phenylalanine, and tyrosine). This may result in competition between Trp and LNAA for blood-brain barrier transporter mechanism. A higher Trp:LNAA enhance Trp transfer to the brain, while lower Trp:LNAA decreases transfer of Trp trough the blood-brain barrier. Why this is important is because Trp is a biosynthetic precursor for the neurotransmitter serotonin and reduced concentrations of this amino acid will result in reduced production of serotonin with increased aggressivity towards stimuli. Studies in humans indicated that diets low in Trp increased aggression, anger, and depression, whereas increased Trp resulted in a feeling of more well-being in people with aggressive traits. In this study, the low protein diet (18.6%) was supplemented so the total content of Trp was 0.48g/1000 kcal and the relation between Trp and LNAA was 0.04:1. Trp content in low protein high Trp was 0,79g/ 1000 kcal and Trp:LNAA was 0.07:1. The high protein diet (30.1) was supplemented so the total Trp was 0,68g/1000 kcal and Trp:LNA was 0.04:1. In the high supplementation of Trp the content was 1.06g /1000 kcal and Trp:LNAA was 0.06:1. The FEDIAF recommendation for tryptophan pr. 1000 kcal is 0,43g for adult dogs and 0,58g for puppies and during reproduction. For puppies in late growth, it is 0,53g Trp/1000 kcal. From this study they concluded that low protein diets or diets high in Trp was helpful in the management of dominance aggression, but also low protein diets supplemented with Trp could be beneficial in reducing territorial aggression in dogs. My personal conclusion is that imbalance between tryptophan and LNAA could be a problem in today’s dog food, because there is no transparency regarding amino acid content in commercial dog food. When we change (increase or decrease) protein content in dogfood, we need also to focus on amino acid content. The recent article by Peng Li and Guoyao Wu covers this field in an excellent way. https:/https://lnkd.in/eCP_fjhE https://lnkd.in/gxSavgQW Please read both of the articles

📳 Calling all animal feed manufacturers! 🐾 Looking to enhance your products with a touch of nature and wellness? Consider our Oregano Essential Oil as a flavorful and beneficial addition to your feeds🐕 Furthermore, recent research highlights the advantageous properties of oregano for animals, making it a highly sought-after ingredient. Studies have shown that essential oils of thyme or oregano, used as growth promoters, can significantly improve body weight gain and feed conversion in broiler chickens. [1]. Moreover, oregano essential oil (OEO) has demonstrated promising effects on intestinal antioxidant capacity, immunity, and gut microbiota of young yellow-feathered chickens, enhancing poultry nutrition [2]. It's worth noting that the European Commission's Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed (FEEDAP) has also acknowledged the safety and efficacy of an essential oil extracted from Origanum vulgare ssp. hirtum for use in animal feeds. These studies, along with others, present a compelling case for including oregano essential oil in animal feeds, which can improve both the taste of the feed and the health outcomes of the animals. the importance of choline in dairy cow nutrition. Choline is an essential nutrient for mammals when excess methionine and folate are not available in the diet. The requirement for choline can be met by dietary choline and by transmethylation reactions. Two types of functions for choline are known: functions of choline per se; functions as a methyl donor. The two principal methyl donors in animal metabolism are betaine, a metabolite of choline, and S-adenosyl-methionine, a metabolite of methionine. Choline and methionine are interchangeable with regard to their methyl group-furnishing functions. In adult ruminants, choline is extensively degraded in the rumen; for this reason dietary choline contributes insignificantly to the choline body pool and methyl group metabolism is generally conservative with a relatively low rate of methyl catabolism and an elevated rate of de novo synthesis of methyl groups via the tetrahydrofolate system. In dairy ruminants, the dietary availability of choline is still low, but the output of methylated compounds in milk is high, and precursors from the tetrahydrofolate pathway are limiting, especially at the onset of lactation. Therefore choline may be a limiting nutrient for milk production in high-yielding dairy cows.

Interactions amongst different nutrients are an interesting area of research needed in dairy nutrition. Here is one example: Choline and methionine! Paul Kononoff and Chad J. demonstrate this in their recent article - https://lnkd.in/g65aZQ_u The observed a choline bioavailability marker increased most dramatically when Met needs were satisfied. No ingredient exists in a vacuum - we need to deliver them all! #Choline #Dairy #nutrition
